The twelve finalists range from titles spanning as far back as early as 1962, to more recently released popular games. The twelve nominees include Asteroids, Call Of Duty, Dance Dance Revolution, Final Fantasy 7, Half-Life, John Madden Football, King's Quest, Metroid, Minecraft, Ms. Pac-Man, Spacewar!, and Tomb Raider. The World Video Game Hall of Fame initially opened in June 2015. Fans from around the globe can nominate any video game to be considered for entry into the Hall of Fame, but ultimately, the for inductees is based of four pieces of criteria: THEGAMER VIDEO OF THE DAY Icon-status – The game is widely recognized, having made an everlasting impact on people’s lives and memories. Longevity – The game has withstood the test of time, with high playability regardless of when it was released. Geographical reach – The game has made a global impact beyond the reach of one country or specific geographical location. Influence – The game has extended its impact outside of the realm of gaming, influencing other forms of media and entertainment or pop culture elements within society. This will be the third year in a row that Tomb Raider is included as a nominee and the second year in a row for Final Fantasy 7. This will also be the third year that Minecraft makes the list of nominees, having been absent from last year’s list. In previous years, inductees were only selected by an “international selection advisory committee comprised of journalists and scholars familiar with the history of video games and their role in society.” This year however, the public is able to vote for their favorite finalists as part of the , in which fans can submit one vote per day. The top-three games with the most public votes will form a single ballot to be included with the twenty-seven other committee ballots. Fans can submit their votes for the “Player’s Choice” ballot from March 27th to April 4th. The final inductees will be announced as part of a special ceremony that will be held at The Strong museum on May 3rd at 10:30am. It will be fun to see how the voting process plays out, especially with the added element of a fan vote. Iconic fan-favorites such as Metroid and Half-Life and sure to see a solid number of votes, as would presumably Tomb Raider and Final Fantasy 7. But will it be enough to beat out industry-innovating games like Spacewar! and Asteroids? We will find out on May 3rd.
