Look, sex is often an important part of a relationship, and it makes sense to have a sex scene in a romance movie or sex comedy, or in cases where it advances the plot or central relationship.

But...sometimes sex scenes and nudity just seem completely random and shoehorned in.* Last week, Reddit user u/Jfowl6665 asked about movie sex scenes that were just 100% unnecessary...and there were a LOT. Here are some of the most nonsensical sex and nude scenes!

*I.e., it feels unnecessary or even nonsensical to the plot, feels exploitative of the actors involved, seems added just to include in the trailer and attract viewers, or just overall is tonally off.

1. In Kingsman: The Secret Service, when the princess proposed anal sex if Eggsy saved the world:

2. In Under Siege, when a Playboy model randomly showed up to burst out of a giant cake and strip in the middle of a tense scene:

Jordan Tate pops out of the cake and strips, then Casey points a gun at her and asks her to shut the music off

3. In Ghostbusters, when a ghost gave Ray a blowjob:

the ghost looks at Ray as he lies down and starts to float down his body as Ray looks up in shock Columbia Pictures "Just why?"

4. In The Chase, when Charlie Sheen's character had sex while he was driving in a high-speed car chase:

"By the time they were done, it was like five-plus hours had passed. Daytime to night. Also there were many news networks and police with cameras on the car. Not one of them saw her climb on top of him and start going at it? I was a 14-year-old boy watching it and couldn't understand why they would put that scene in."—u/zeejay81

5. In Drive Angry, when Nicolas Cage's character had sex fully clothed during a gunfight:

Nicolas Cage's character lifts up the woman he's having sex with and shoots a man Summit Entertainment / Warner Bros. Pictures "Cage has a sex scene midway through the movie. He doesn't take any of his clothes off as this waitress rides him. Then a gun fight breaks out. Rather than, ya know, anything else: The sex continues with Cage swinging the woman from side to side, and he fires his gun around her at the attackers. It was absolutely unnecessary, but hilariously dumb."

6. In Shark Attack 3, when there was this incredibly bad piece of dialogue followed by a sex scene:

"I watched this movie with no prior knowledge of this line, so I was beyond shocked and cried laughing when I first heard this."—u/Bradderz_SG

7. In Watchmen, when Nite Owl and Laurie had a loooong sex scene to a cover of 'Hallelujah':

—u/Cant_climb_Teflon
"That was definitely one of the dumbest scenes in that movie, if not the actual dumbest scene. It's so bad that I recently rewatched that movie, and I either walked out of the room during that part, or I completely mentally blocked it out, because I didn't remember it existing until I read this comment. One criticism I have of Watchmen was their music being so on the nose, and being way too made up of hit songs that it ends up making me roll my eyes and takes me out of the film."—u/munk_e_man

8. And also the Dr. Manhattan sex scene, which then showed Dr. Manhattan nude:

9. In Return of the Living Dead, when one character randomly takes off her shirt:

women at graveyard asks man next to her if he's thought about the worst way to die, then says for her the worst way would be old men biting her and eating her alive, and that first, they'd tear off her clothes — she rips off her shirt as she speaks

It was that 1980s gratuitous nudity that was typical for the time."
—u/ILoveRegenHealth

10. The sex scene at the beginning of 300:

—u/mynameisnotbob57"Just watched 300 with my dad, and there was a pretty long fuck scene right in the beginning. Could have cut it and it would've made no difference. Thanks, Zack Snyder!"
—u/bpm918

11. In Star Trek: Into Darkness, when Alice Eve stripped down:

I mean she is drop-dead gorgeous, but it didn't fit well into the movie."
—u/Firebolt164

12. In Eternals, when Ikaris and Sersi had sex:

—u/Packer1979
"For real. There was no buildup to it at all. Ikaris is like, 'I love you,' and then they just bang on a rock in the desert. Such a weird scene in the movie."
—u/Rickys_Pot_Addiction

13. In Batman: The Killing Joke, when Batgirl and Batman randomly had sex:

It was not in the original comic and frankly crosses a number of lines of age, the fact that she is his 'son's' girlfriend, the fact that he is her mentor, etc. Just no."
—u/otiswrath

14. On Supernatural, when Dean and Cassie had a really drawn-out sex scene in Season 1:

They have an extremely long, drawn-out, poorly acted sex scene that felt insanely out of place and forced. [They] could have had them just kiss, or smile and go into a room. No, I have to watch him actively hump her for more than a minute."
—u/FusRoDoodles

15. Just every sex scene in The Room:

Lisa and Johnny kissing on their bed
Lisa and Johnny kissing on their bed Chloe Productions / TPW Films "There’s only one answer for this, and that answer is The Room. And there were multiple sex scenes."
—u/amurderofcrows

16. The gratuitous threesome scene in The Mule:

—u/TriscuitCracker

17. In Stargate SG-1, when there was a nude scene in the pilot:

topless character with
topless character with Showtime "The pilot episode for Stargate SG-1. The producers didn't want to have to worry about complaints for content, so they included a full frontal nudity scene in the pilot episode that was completely unnecessary (and in fact some later releases cut it out). There is never full frontal nudity anywhere else in the entire series, and only suggested nudity a handful of times. The scene was only there as a way to set a bar so no one could complain about any future content."
—u/dion_starfire

18. And when The OA had a sex scene in their first episode:

one character kissing a naked character's back
one character kissing a naked character's back Netflix "The Netflix series The OA. ... There is a sex scene that's kinda graphic in the very first episode. I kinda wonder if the creators of the show stuck it in there as a 'hook' for a certain demographic. Totally not necessary though, and from what I can remember the show's two seasons didn't have additional sex scenes."
—u/buckeyespud

19. In The Matrix Reloaded, when Neo and Trinity had a looooong sex scene:

"The Matrix part two decided to put in an unnecessary cave rave scene, which was all foreplay for a sex scene that I don't feel anyone needed to, or wanted to see."
—u/MIghtyFinePicnic

20. In Game of Thrones, when Arya and Gendry had sex:

Arya pushes Genry down as she starts to undress HBO "I really hated the Arya sex scene in Game of Thrones. It was so unnecessary, so pointless, and so uncomfortable given viewers had literally just watched her grow up from a little girl."
—u/LegendOfDylan

21. The nude scene at the start of Open Water:

Daniel and a naked Susan in bed together
Daniel and a naked Susan in bed together Lions Gate Films "It's fucking unreal how completely irrelevant it was to the plot."
—u/jayycrisis
"YES! I couldn’t believe that one. It was like, 'Here is the lead actress naked. Please keep watching our movie.' Literally NOTHING to do with the plot."—u/Smaugulous

22. And finally....the toe job in From Dusk Till Dawn:

Tarantino sucking on a woman's foot/toes Miramax Films Suggested by GETSOMECERONAAAYYY
