At Cedars-Sinai, you will receive care from asthma specialists who completed extra training through fellowships. This training allows us to tailor care to meet your unique needs. What is Asthma Asthma happens when inflammation or too much mucus causes a temporary narrowing of your airways (bronchoconstriction). You may also experience bronchoconstriction on its own. Asthma symptoms make it difficult to move air in and out of your lungs. Some people experience asthma attacks during which symptoms suddenly become worse. There is no cure for asthma. But treatments can help you get relief from symptoms and may lower your risk for future asthma attacks. FIND OUT MORE ABOUT ASTHMA Our Approach to Asthma Treatment Our Cedars-Sinai specialists successfully treat common and hard-to-manage forms of asthma, including severe asthma that doesn’t respond to standard medications. We also deliver preventive treatments and explain how to handle symptom flare-ups so you can feel your best. If your symptoms are under control, we change your asthma treatments so you aren't taking medications you don't need. Highlights of our program include: Innovative treatments: We offer the best available care options, including biologic therapies for severe asthma. If asthma medications fail to control your symptoms, biologic therapies can help you get much-needed relief. These treatments work by controlling airway inflammation at the cellular level. Complete care: In addition to asthma treatments, we'll recommend additional steps you can take to stay healthy. Your care may also include regular pneumonia and flu shots. Accurate diagnosis: Some lung conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and immunological diseases have symptoms that are similar to asthma. We may perform additional tests to confirm or rule out other conditions. Read more about our lung diagnostic services. Your Asthma Action Plan We work with you to develop a personalized plan to help you achieve the best possible results. Treatment may include: Asthma medications and inhalers Your care may include two types of asthma medications: Long-term (control) medications: Taking these medications daily can prevent asthma symptoms. Quick-relief (rescue) medications: These medications, which you breathe in with an inhaler, quickly calm asthma symptoms. Rescue medications only last for a short time. Biologic therapies for severe asthma If asthma medications fail to control your symptoms, you may have severe asthma. If you meet certain criteria, biologic therapies may be used for treatment. With biologic therapies, special proteins disrupt the changes in your cells that cause severe asthma symptoms. We give you these therapies by injection. Allergy shots If you have allergic asthma, your care may include allergy shots. This treatment helps your body develop a tolerance for the substances you are allergic to. Over time, your allergic reactions may become less severe and less likely to trigger asthma attacks. Still Have Questions or Need Help If you need a diagnosis, treatment or second opinion, call or send a message to our care team. You can also have us call you back at your convenience.
