Flavoured gin, coloured gin, and most importantly – affordable gin. But what if we told you that you could get a gin wine? That’s right, a spirit that combines traditional gin with white wine. Revolutionary stuff, right? And we’ve got Aldi to thank for it. Aldi Sorgin, £24.99, Aldi The popular budget supermarket has launched over 10 different flavoured gins this year, the latest being Sorgin – a new gin made using Sauvignon Blanc grapes and juniper berries. Created by French winegrowers and vineyard owners Sabine Jaren and François Lurton, the spirit is the first of its kind to be launched by Aldi. As well as the wine grapes, it contains a variety of botanicals including lemon, violet, broom flower, lime zest and blackcurrant buds. No wonder both Jaren and Lurton have described the refreshing new tipple as a ‘great aromatic intensity’ as well as having a ‘beautiful and elegant aftertaste.’ Alamy Stock Photo As always, you can also expect the price to be just as inviting as the concept as a bottle of Sorgin will only cost you £24.99. Sounds like an offer we can’t refuse. As recommended by the makers, the spirit should be served neat, or with tonic, garnished with a twist of grapefruit or orange to compliment it best. While this is the first time Aldi have tried their hand at gin wine, the concept isn’t completely new. In fact, wine experts have previously predicted the rise in the trend. Speaking to Good Housekeeping, Olivier Ward, co-founder of Gin Foundry said: ‘There are wine-makers becoming gin-makers, and there are a lot of gin-makers looking at how wine-makers do things and adopting practices and philosophies from the wine-making territories,’ explaining that there are gin-makers that are using grape-based spirits to produce gin.
