AARP Tax-Aide Provides Free Tax Assistance and Preparation

With the chaos of tax season upon us, AARP Tax-Aide services can provide guidance for your tax woes. Tax-Aide is the nation’s largest, free, volunteer-run tax counseling and preparation service. It provides assistance to low- and middle-income taxpayers with special attention to those ages 60 and older. You do not need to be a member of AARP or a retiree to use this service. “We do e-file returns—electronic filing provides faster returns,” local Tax-Aide coordinator Sophie Rushing recently told her community newspaper, the Palestine Herald-Press. “You can get a return in as little as eight days and the best part is it doesn't cost anything.”

The Tax-Aide program began in 1968 with four volunteers. Since that time, it has grown to a program that involves around 35,000 AARP volunteers who help 2.6 million individuals file their federal, state and local taxes each year. The AARP Tax-Aide program is offered at approximately 6,500 locations nationwide in senior centers, libraries, community centers, and at other convenient locations.

In 2008, more than 2,000 AARP Tax-Aide volunteers helped file 200,000 federal tax returns. The program is offered at approximately 335 sites in Texas including senior centers, libraries, malls and other convenient locations.

“AARP Tax-Aide is a valuable resource, especially during these tough economic times,” said Bob Jackson, AARP Texas Senior State Director. “Tax law can often be confusing. AARP Tax-Aide volunteers can make the process of filling out tax returns a whole lot easier.” Visit online to near you. Hours vary by location but often include weekends or evenings.
