We Want You To Serve and Guide New Oregon Diversity Advisory Council
Population studies show the state’s and nation’s populations aging at rapid rates and also becoming more and more diverse. It’s estimated that by 2050, the number of older adults will have doubled (in Oregon, one of five adults will soon be 65+) while minorities are projected to comprise 54 percent of our country’s population.
As AARP Oregon State Director Jerry Cohen explains, “these changing demographics pose both unique opportunities and challenges that are critical for us to collectively discuss and address. We are excited to launch this new Council to help meet that need and urge older Oregonians of all backgrounds apply. ”
The Council will help:
1. Provide guidance and support to AARP Oregon staff and volunteer leaders to ensure diversity and inclusion in all AARP activities, including the recruitment, orientation and support of volunteers.
2. Lead, develop, implement, and evaluate special initiatives and strategies to reach, serve and engage diverse communities on issues like health and long-term care, financial security and livable communities.
3. Implement sustained dialogue, planning and action to meet the challenges and opportunities presented by Oregon’s increasingly diverse and aging population.
The Council is looking for volunteers that represent the diversity of Oregon – from age, background and geographic locales to ethnic, racial, immigrant and refugee, GLBTQI, disability, and faith-based community membership.
As Ray Miao, AARP Oregon Volunteer State President, says: “Diversity is about so much more than what we see. Diversity is about recognizing differences and accepting or working with them. Everyone is unique and brings invaluable ideas and perspectives to the table. But we also have common or shared challenges and opportunities. By coming together, we can really make our communities better. Please consider applying today – we need your input!”
Retired recruiter and former school administrator, Daniel Rodriguez will head the new council.
“I’m honored to be part of this outreach effort to Oregon’s diverse communities,” Rodriguez said.. “I am equally excited about the Council’s potential to help shape and influence AARP’s work in our state. Please consider joining this crucial effort!”

Recognizing diversity as a powerful force for change, innovation and opportunity, AARP has created the Oregon Diversity Advisory Council and is now seeking up to 12 committed volunteers from across the state to serve on this new Council.Population studies show the state’s and nation’s populations aging at rapid rates and also becoming more and more diverse.
