Four Nebraska Communities Strive to Create the Good

For over 50 years, AARP has honored the legacy of service passed down by our founder, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus. We’ve done so by engaging our members with a wide range of opportunities to serve others. More than 9 million people make a difference through AARP’s various networks for volunteers, donors and activists. Now, AARP is expanding the opportunities we provide to help people give back. It’s called Create the Good and offers people ways to improve the lives of others, whether through a five-minute online commitment or an ongoing engagement in their community. shows how you can begin your own volunteer efforts using Do It Yourself toolkits on a wide range of topics such as home safety, managing medications, energy conservation, fighting consumer fraud and alleviating hunger. Short how-to videos walk you through the steps. Anyone can use the Create the Good database to search for volunteering opportunities, while local agencies, organizations and individual members of communities can post volunteer opportunities. We want to make it easy for you to lend a hand, in your time, on your terms.

The Create the Good database is continually updated with new volunteering opportunities, so please remember to check back often to see what has been posted in your community. You can also join the Create the Good online community to share your experiences and get new ideas for “creating the good” in your own backyard. AARP Nebraska is supporting Create the Good through focused volunteer opportunities. Throughout 2010, we’ll be teaming up with community organizations, agencies and individuals to ‘create the good’ through hands-on service projects in Lincoln, Omaha, Hastings and Saline County.

Some of the many activities might include helping low-income older homeowners apply for the homestead exemption; free community shredding events to prevent identity theft; assisting older residents with in-home to do lists, transportation to doctor visits and grocery shopping; or educating residents about energy efficiency resources to lower their utility costs.

If you live in one of these communities and are interested in getting involved with local Create the Good initiatives, send email to [email protected] or call 1-866-389-5651 toll free.
