It was an outing to forget for the Sri Lankans. The Asia Cup champions drew first blood in this contest and had the Kiwis reeling at 15-3 at the end of the 4th over in the first innings. However, they completely lost their way from there on and allowed the Blackcaps to take control. New Zealand just needed a sniff to get back into this game and Sri Lanka gave them a lot more than that.
Glenn Phillips was at the forefront of the New Zealand fightback with his belligerent century. The lone warrior played the knock of his life to single-handedly drag his side back into the contest and post a healthy total on the board on a slightly tricky surface. No prizes for guessing who the player of the match will be after that knock. Eventually, he's ended up with a couple more runs than the entire Sri Lankan team.
With a decent total on the board, the bowlers put their hands up and did what they do best. The lethal combination of Boult and Southee ran riot early on to have the Lankans reeling at 8-4. There was some sort of a fight put on by Rajapaksa but it didn't last long as he was dismissed by Ferguson.
The procession of wickets continued with Santner and Sodhi chipping in to kill the game in the first phase of the innings itself. Dasun Shanaka's vigil came to an abrupt end, which was the final nail in the coffin for the Sri Lankans. Dasun Shanaka's side have themselves to blame for that result. They allowed New Zealand to get back into the contest and paid the prize for it. 19.2 Ish Sodhi to Lahiru Kumara, OUT! THAT WILL BE THAT! Wrong'un tossed up on a length outside off stump. Kumara comes down the track and has a wild slog at it. Unsurprisingly, he misses the ball by a mile and the keeper has no problems in whipping off the bails! After a slight wobble at the start, this has been a commanding performance by the Kiwis and they inch a step closer to qualification!
Lahiru Kumara st Devon Conway b Ish Sodhi 4 (5b 1x4 0x6) 19.1 Ish Sodhi to Kasun Rajitha, short delivery outside off stump. Rajitha goes back and cuts the ball towards the sweeper at deep point for another single Southee wraps up his night's work with figures of 1/12. It was him and Boult who got the ball rolling for the Kiwis and it's that duo that has sealed the deal for their side. Final over coming up and it's a mere formality. 19 0 0 0 0 1w 0 1 18.6 Tim Southee to Kasun Rajitha, slower delivery on a length on leg stump. Rajitha comes half forward and tips the ball into the on side before galloping across to the other end Final ball of Southee's spell coming up. It'll be quite fitting if he wraps things up here, won't it? 18.5 Tim Southee to Kasun Rajitha, back of a length delivery outside off stump. The commentary is not available for this match. Please check the scorecard for latest updates. It's another triple-header coming your way tomorrow to set up a Super Sunday! There's plenty of action coming your way with all six teams from the other group battling it out. We'll be back tomorrow morning to take you through all the action that unravels. Until then, this is Pratyush Rohra, signing off on behalf of my partner, Shashwat Kumar. Buh bye! Right then. New Zealand complete a comprehensive victory to give their NRR a significant boost which might be enough in helping them seal their spot in the semi-finals. Of course, we'll have to wait for a few more days to make that official. As for Sri Lanka, that's a significant dent in their hopes to make it to the next round. Perhaps even more disappointing was the manner of the defeat. Kane Williamson: It (the pitch) was different. The slower balls were stopping in the surface and it was a bit variable. On different surfaces, it's important to try to make those adjustments are important. (Phillips) It was an incredible knock to get a very very good total on that surface. Any hundred is amazing but the way he put pressure on the opposition after a poor start was great. We wanted to be aggressive (with the ball). We knew it was the kind of wicket where we just had to hit the right lengths. The boys executed the plans really well. Dasun Shanaka: We started really well, particularly in the first ten overs. Credit to Phillips, who played an outstanding knock. We had a few areas to address, the fielding mainly with a couple of dropped catches. 160 was always tough against their bowling attack. We never got set in there and lost wickets in regular intervals. Losing five wickets in the first eight overs was never going to make it easy. We have a couple of games to go and a bit of time. Hopefully, we can get things right. Glenn Phillips, Player of the Match: (discussions with Mitchell) Me and Daryl were clear in that we wanted to be positive. on a pitch like that, it was difficult to hit slower balls and we wanted to get a competitive total. The way the bowlers bowled, the way we took our catches was incredible. At the end of the day, the boys said there is no point injuring yourself (on his cramps) but still went back for a few overs. The feeling is indescribable. I was actually more happy with my process more than anything. They swung it up front, the slower balls they bowled into the pitch. The way the bowlers bowled and the high energy, it was exceptional all around. New Zealand won by 65 runs!Glenn Phillips - 104 (64) Trent Boult - 4/13
