For the time being, this is signing off with a goodbye and a thank you! Have a great night! This is only the Round of 16, though, and the war is far from won. England might have the easier path to the final, but much of the discourse surrounding their 2018 World Cup campaign was similar. England have been knocked out by Iceland and Croatia in their last two major tournaments, so taking the Euros lightly is not an option.
Sweden take on Ukraine in another intriguing fixture in less than an hour's time. My good friend is bringing you live updates from the game, so head on over!
For England, it's a night of drink, song, and celebration!! What a second half we've had at Wembley, Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling have etched their names into English footballing folklore with their goals. Shout-outs to Jack Grealish and Luke Shaw, who were crucial to their side's resurgence. So good, so good, so good. fans belting out Sweet Caroline. Noise levels at Euro 96 setting. What a game! Deserved win. Strong performances all over, Pickford, Stones, Maguire, Trippier, Shaw, Sterling, amongst others, Saka for a while, Grealish. Sterling motm imo. - Henry Winter (@henrywinter) Germany, on the other hand, have only themselves to blame for a bullet to the foot. They were scrappy and inconsistent, and lacked precision in the final third. This may well be Joachim Low's last game in charge of Die Mannschaft - what a servant he has been to the beautiful game.
Germany will have to pick themselves up quickly, their ongoing transition has not been easy but they can take some positives from this tournament. Group F (of Death) teams all out at next stage. Toughest games, hottest temps taking its toll. Sound of the summer again - B/R Football (@brfootball) I’ve not been this happy in ages!!!
??????????????????- michael owen (@themichaelowen) England are through to the quarterfinals, and all the noise surrounding Southgate's choices before the game have now been reduced to just that - noise. His players played their hearts out on the pitch tonight and defended with their lives towards the end. A thoroughly well-deserved victory for England, who will now face one of Sweden and Ukraine in the quarterfinals this weekend! With the history and tradition that comes with this fixture, this England victory is HUGE. Germany's unbeaten run at Wembley comes to an end, and it is only fitting that the England captain breaks his drought against a bonafide European giant in front of a rapturous home crowd. FULL TIME:

This could potentially be the Bayern veteran's last game at the Euros. 90 + 1' Havertz! Four minutes of stoppage time. 90' Germany push forward in search of some hope. Sane puts in the cross this time, but Goretzka can't time his volley. Is that the end for Germany? 81' THOMAS MULLER, HOW HAVE YOU NOT SCORED?!! 78' Muller into the wall! Germany need to step up, Wembley is bursting at the seams right now. 77' Yellow Card for Harry Maguire.
Kimmich found space at the edge of the area and is fouled. Germany have a shot at an immediate response here.. Brilliant play from England! The United left-back puts plenty of pace on the cross, and Sterling can seemingly do no wrong at Euro 2020! 75' GOOOOOOAAAAAL ENGLAND!! RAHEEM STERLING! 1-0! Kieran Trippier is down here with what looks like a cramp. The medical staff are hard at work, and Trippier leaves the field temporarily.. 72' Yellow Card for Robin Gosens
Unnecessary challenge from Gosens. Trippier was passing back into his own half and Gosens decides to catch his foot well after the fact. 71' Poor passes all around. Trippier plays the ball into no man's land in midfield, Goretzka intercepts but gives the ball straight back to England. 70' Germany are all over Grealish when he gets the ball, and Havertz does well to win a foul. This will not be an easy game for the Villa man. 69' Jack Grealish comes on for Bukayo Saka.
Right, so Grealish can really create. England need to make sure he gets as much of the ball as possible. 68' Serge Gnabry on for Timo Werner.
Germany replace pace with pace, Gnabry can be lethal on his day. Serge Gnabry and Jack Grealish are warming up on the sidelines. Can they provide the spark this game so desperately needs? 67' Germany try something different with a long ball. Pickford is alert though, and doesn't need to come off his line to catch that. 65' Germany threaten again with Havertz and Werner on the left, but England defend the cross. Sterling comes away on the counter but is fouled, and England win a free-kick. Story of the night so far. The camera pans to Jack Grealish on the bench. This game is screaming out for a player of his talents. Something needs to give here.. 62' England are settling into their rhythm now after a shaky 15 minutes. They try to mount an attack but Sterling's cross is overhit, and Neuer easily collects. 59' Saka gives Ginter a few problems but the German defender gets there first. His follow-through catches the Arsenal man though, and he's limping now. Wembley was screaming for blood there - Ginter is already on a yellow card. 58' Germany don't get much out of that set-piece as England repel their efforts. Die Mannschaft will have to start again. 57' End-to-end stuff!! Sterling charges forward after linking up with Kane, but Germany nip the ball and launch a counter immediately. Havertz finds Werner in space, the striker twists and turns but can only win a corner. 56' Sighs of relief across Wembley as Harry Kane seems to have recovered and is back on the pitch. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has not been named on the bench tonight. England do not have another central striker, and an injury to their captain will mean either Sterling or Rashford down the middle. Harry Kane is down with a niggle here, and Southgate looks extremely worried.. 54' Germany are trying to stamp their authority here, and Havertz is seeing a lot of the ball on the right. He tries to outrun Sterling, but the latter wins the foot race. 51' England push forward with a long throw, and Germany look to counter after winning the ball. Brilliant tackle from Trippier stops them in their tracks. 48' HAVERTZ!! Germany force their way into the final third and Kai Havertz fires a thunderous volley! Brilliant reflexes from Pickford to tip that over the bar. 47' Several intricate passes from both sets of players in these opening stages. This might not be too different from the first half.. WE'RE UNDERWAY WITH THE SECOND HALF!
England kick things off from left to right. England have adopted a visibly cautious approach to this game, which is strange given they're playing in their own backyard. But one look at what happened to Portugal last week tells you all you need to know about this Germany side. They can turn on the style, and England deserve credit for keeping them at bay. Harry Kane had 9 touches in total in that first half, 0 shots. In Spurs’ final PL match of the season at Leicester, he had 37 touches in 90 mins (scored). 0-0 - Jacqui Oatley (@JacquiOatley) What a photo - B/R Football (@brfootball) Time to bring on Sancho...- Erling Haaland (@ErlingHaaland) England took their time to find their rhythm but have been the better team so far - albeit marginally. Their best chance came at the end of the half when Harry Kane nearly managed to give his side the lead.
Bukayo Saka and Kieran Trippier have been the standout performers so far for England, and have wreaked havoc on that right flank. Southgate has a few prodigious names on that bench - how long will he wait before making his changes? Germany came close with an effort from Timo Werner that Pickford did well to save. Robin Gosens nearly scored another header in that first half, and the likes of Goretzka and Havertz have been impressive so far. A frantic end to what was an entertaining half of football from both these teams. England and Germany exchanged bouts of possession and dominance, and both outfits have had their chances so far. HALF TIME:
England 0-0 Germany 45 + 1' HOW HAVE ENGLAND NOT SCORED?! Thomas Muller's shocking backpass sends Sterling on his way, and the German defence clatters into him. The ball falls kindly for Harry Kane, whose touch takes him past Neuer.
Hummels' intervention was nothing short of heroic! Scores still level. Only one minute of added time.. 45' Yellow Card for Kalvin Phillips.
Horribly mistimed challenge from the Leeds man, a nasty stamp on Toni Kroos. 44' Smart from England! Trippier catches Germany off guard with a lob towards Kane, but the experienced Hummels reacts in time. Germany clear their lines from the corner. 42' Harry Kane finally gets the ball in an advanced area, turns quickly and runs at the German defence. He's promptly brought down, and Trippier is standing over the free-kick. 41' Both teams are huffing and puffing for a chance here at the moment - this has been a tight game. 37' England are piling on the pressure now with a few intricate passes on the right. Germany manage to intercept eventually, and Havertz emerges with the ball. Far too much space for a player of Kroos' class there.. England will have to be wary of his talents. Germany have improved since the half-hour mark. 35' Kroos plays a wonderful forward lob to Kimmich, but the Bayern man is marginally offside. 33' WERNER! Havertz with space this time in midfield and finds his Chelsea teammate in the area. Pickford does brilliantly to narrow the angle - Germany are picking up the pace here.. 32' CHANCE FOR GERMANY!!! Kimmich gets into the game and curls a brilliant cross into the area. Gosens tries his absolute best to get to the far post, but is inches away from his header. 31' Germany win a free-kick after a tense passage of play. They really do need more of the ball to impose themselves on this game. Germany started well, but these last few minutes we've seen sheer English domination. Germany have not been comfortable in midfield and need to get Kroos on the ball. 27' Maguire!! He should do better there. Phillips finds Trippier in plenty of space on the right, and his cross is accurate. Maguire's header has neither the power nor the accuracy, and Germany survive. 26' Excellent defensive header from Kimmich! Neuer tries his best to prevent the corner but the ball is behind the line. 25' Yellow Card for Matthias Ginter.
A blatant tug on Luke Shaw's shirt there, and England have another free-kick. 24' Shaw's delivery is to the far post, and the ball bounces around a bit before Germany bring it out of their box. No counters this time - England have the ball again. 23' England are pressing with good effect at the moment, and nip another German attack in the bud. Saka pops up on the left now and wins another free-kick. 19' Germany attempt a counter to rid themselves of the pressure, and Werner is free on the left. Muller's cross-field ball is uncharacteristically inaccurate and the move breaks down. 17' Maguire this time!! The corner is accurate, and United's captain gets his header on target. It's straight at Neuer, though. Good passage of play for England! 16' RAHEEM STERLING!!! The winger cuts into space and curls his effort towards the corner. Manuel Neuer is quick on his feet and makes a good save. 15' England are forced back from the set-piece, but that was much better from the Three Lions. It's their turn with the ball now. 13' Saka does well! Squirms his way past Rudiger, who clearly gets in the way. Free-kick for England near the corner flag. 12' It's Germany on top at the moment, with England unable to keep much of the ball. They have a throw-in now though, and need to get a foothold here. 10' Havertz into the wall!! Declan Rice takes another one for the team, and gets in the way of the shot. Germany back in possession now. Free-kick for Germany, in a very dangerous position just outside the penalty area.. 8' Yellow card for Declan Rice.
England nearly concede an advantage, as Muller sets his Bayern teammate Goretzka through on goal. Rice takes one for the team, but that was nearly a penalty.. 7' Pickford does well! Timo Werner gets in between England's centre-backs but the shot-stopper is off his line to clear. Both teams have set up in a 3-4-3 at the moment, so we can all expect a few tactical punches to be thrown tonight. This should be an intriguing battle - maybe not quite as open as yesterday's matches, but an excellent viewing nonetheless! 4' Goretzka with the first shot of the game! Far too comfortable for Pickford, though, the Bayern man's effort was speculative at best. 3' Germany now mount their attack as Goretzka surges through, a corner is the result. England are robust with their defence, and Germany have to start again. 2' England win an early free-kick, but Germany clear their lines. KICK-OFF!
Germany kick things off, attacking from left to right. We're only minutes away from the start here at Wembley Stadium, the players are out of the tunnels. Time for the anthems! Right, so there's plenty of time left for kick-off - far too much if you ask me. So while we wait for this high-profile clash between two of Europe's biggest teams, here are a few interesting tidbits of information to keep you company.
Germany have largely stuck to their guns, but Joachim Low has also come up with a couple of surprise changes. Ilkay Gundogan finds himself on the bench with Leon Goretzka starting in his place, and Timo Werner has been preferred over Serge Gnabry. Line-ups for ?????? !
Score predictions? - Sportskeeda Football (@skworldfootball) 48% - England have won 12 of their 25 games when starting with a back 3/5 under Gareth Southgate (48%), losing eight (32%); this is compared to 24 wins in 32 games when starting with a back 4 (75%), losing just two (6%). Structure. - OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) So the reports were right after all. Gareth Southgate has decided to go toe-to-toe with Germany and has named a 3-4-3 formation. Kyle Walker fills in as the third centre-back, with Bukayo Saka starting in the front three.
Mason Mount, Jack Grealish, Phil Foden, Jadon Sancho - these are only some of the names on England's bench tonight. Will their tactical ploy work wonders, or could it potentially come back to haunt them? Germany Official XI (3-4-3):
Manuel Neuer; Mats Hummels, Antonio Rudiger, Matthias Ginter; Robin Gosens, Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka, Toni Kroos; Kai Havertz, Thomas Muller, Timo Werner
Substitutes:
Marcel Halstenberg, Kevin Volland, Serge Gnabry, Bernd Leno, Jamal Musiala, Niklas Sule, Florian Neuhaus, Leroy Sane, Ilkay Gundogan, Kevin Trapp, Emre Can, Robin Koch England Official XI (3-4-3):
Jordan Pickford; Harry Maguire, John Stones, Kyle Walker; Kieran Trippier, Luke Shaw, Declan Rice, Kalvin Phillips; Bukayo Saka, Raheem Sterling, Harry Kane
Substitutes:
Jack Grealish, Jordan Henderson, Aaron Ramsdale, Marcus Rashford, Tyrone Mings, Conor Coady, Jadon Sancho, Mason Mount, Phil Foden, Sam Johnstone, Reece James, Jude Bellingham LINE-UPS ARE OUT! To pass the time until kick-off - Germany (@DFB_Team_EN) Right, we were about 40 minutes away from the official line-ups. Time to get our predictions in! Here's ours:
“I’d bench Kane for the first half!”
“I’d go Sterling on the left, Sancho in the middle & Foden on the right.”
? “Then if we win the next match no one will have a clue what we’ll do!”
This fan tells us how he thinks can be beaten tonight… - talkSPORT (@talkSPORT) Germany's first team has a touch of clarity to it, but that could be because Joachim Low will not want to tinker with a side that thrashed Portugal in the Group of Death. The Germans do have some defensive concerns but are unlikely to make wholesale changes to a robust and settled team. Fans and pundits alike have already had their say on England's line-up for this game, with recent reports from the press suggesting that Southgate has opted for a three-man defence. Bukayo Saka is pushing for a start after his excellent showing against Czech Republic and may well be given another opportunity tonight. “It would be good to play Kyle Walker as a wing back. He’ll kill Gosens’ supremacy.”
“I’d go Sterling, Kane and Grealish.” ??????
José Mourinho picks the England starting line up he would play against Germany. - talkSPORT (@talkSPORT) Bukayo Saka expected to start England’s last-16 tie v Germany. 19yo shone in final group game & likely to join Sterling behind Kane. Mount, Grealish + Foden look set to be on bench with anticipated to go 3-4-3 - David Ornstein (@David_Ornstein) England were touted as one of the favourites coming into the tournament but have since scored only two goals in the competition. The Three Lions have not been defeated as yet but will have to wary of a vintage German onslaught tonight.
Much has been said about England's selection dilemmas in recent weeks and the discourse surrounding today's encounter will be no different. Gareth Southgate has a host of attacking options to choose from and cannot afford to make a mistake with his line-up. I'm , your host for the evening, and I do sincerely hope that today's game is as much of a blockbuster as the absolute spectacles we witnessed yesterday.

The Three Lions have not been defeated as yet but will have to wary of a vintage German onslaught tonight.
