Mai Kagetsu is from Motoyoshi Village and the daughter of Tobei Kagetsu who is the head of the Kagetsu family who is one of the biggest herb seller family in Land of Fire. At first, Mai and her family lived together in one house, but when they became rich, her sister and brother stayed away from the main family house. Mai brother Futa Kagetsu requested Lady Tsunade to send a substitute to attend the Funeral as a chief Mourner who doesn’t laugh at all. This is because, in his father's will, it was mentioned that if Futa, his elder son would inherit the entire Kagetsu family estate. However, if Futa laughs at his funeral as a chief mourner, then he would lose the estate of the Kagetsu family, and that estate will be divided among his other children. Tsunade selected and for this mission and gave Shino the task of being the chief Mourner at the funeral because he did not laugh.
When Naruto Uzumaki and Shino Aburame were talking to Futa Kagetsu about the mission, Mai Kagetsu met them and invited them for dinner. When they were about to start dinner, Shino said to let him taste the food first because he suspected poison, and when Shino ate it, he started laughing and told that it contained some laughing drug which made Mai worried about Shino.
The next day, Shino spotted Mai going inside the jungle. He follows her and finds out that the old granny they met before coming to Kagetsu's home is the same one whom Mai is talking to. Shino came out and asked about the situation, and there he found out that the old granny was none other than Tobie Kagetsu, who faked his death to reunite the whole family in one place.
Later, when Mai and Tobie revealed their plan to their family, all the family members agreed to Tobie's view, and they all decided to live together as one happy family.
