College HOF names Tadlock Coach of the Year NCAA.com
CHAMPS
PRESENTED BY LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech second-year head baseball coach Tim Tadlock has been named the 2014 National College Baseball Hall of Fame Skip Bertman National Coach of the Year, the organization announced Friday morning. Tadlock led his alma mater to the College World Series for the first time in school history while the Red Raiders have posted a 45-19 overall record this season. The award is given annually to the top collegiate baseball coach from any level. Tadlock will be honored at the Hall of Fame’s annual Night of Champions celebration on Saturday, June 28 in Lubbock. The Red Raiders memorable season includes winning the program’s first NCAA regional and super regional while recording the biggest turnaround in school history with 19 more wins this season than in the previous season (26-30 record). Tech knocked off No. 3 Miami (Fla.) at the Coral Gables Regional before sweeping No. 16 College of Charleston at the Lubbock Super Regional last weekend with a pair of 1-0 victories. It marked just the second time in NCAA Super Regionals history that a team had shutout an opponent during the best-two-of-three series. Tech’s 45 wins are its most since the 1997 season while 17 wins this season were comeback victories. The Red Raiders currently lead the Big 12 in batting (.287), slugging percentage (.409), hits (612), doubles (123), triples (24) and fielding percentage (.981). The Red Raiders broke a school record with nine shutouts this season -– four of which have come in the NCAA Tournament. Tech’s pitchers bring a 3.17 ERA into the CWS – which marks the program’s lowest ERA during the aluminum bat era (since 1974). Tech matched a school record and ranked second in the nation with 33 home wins. Tadlock and the Red Raiders won 16 consecutive games to end the season, which was the longest active home winning streak in the country. It marks Tadlock’s third career National Coach of the Year honor after winning back-to-back National Junior College Athletic Association championships while at Grayson County College in 1999-2000. The award, sponsored by Easton-Bell Sports, is named for Bertman, who coached at LSU from 1984-2001. During his tenure, he won five national championships and was named National Coach of the Year six times. He coached 31 players who went on to play Major League Baseball and was inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame as part of the inaugural class in 2006. Since that time, three of his players have joined him in the Hall of Fame.
