Champions League final live Man City vs Chelsea result as Kai Havertz scores winning goal

The Athletic StaffChelsea won their second Champions League title by denying Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in Saturday’s all-English final at the Estadio Do Dragao. City were favourites ahead of the final but suffered a disappointing night and lost the match thanks to Kai Havertz’s first-half goal. The 21-year-old collected a defence-splitting pass from Mason Mount before dribbling past goalkeeper Ederson to score. You can relive all of the action below. Advertisement

That' s all folks

Thanks so much for joining us for a wonderful final to end a remarkable season. See you in a couple weeks for the Euros. Football never sleeps. I'll leave you with Simon Johnson and Sam Lee dissecting the final and exactly why Chelsea came out on top.

What a night for Mason Mount

Mount's brilliant assist was the icing on the cake of a brilliant season for the youngster, a product of Chelsea's youth system who the club refused to loan out last summer. He tells BT Sport: "I played in two finals for Chelsea and we lost them both. The way that hurt. I dreamt of playing in finals and winning it, that's what this club is all about. "It is unbelievable. My dad has just come down from the stands. I burst into tears seeing him. I thank my family for everything."

Havertz lost for words

Not quite the Seinfeld classic, "I am speechless. I am without speech" but the German hero told BT, "I don't know what to say." You don't need to say anything son, go and enjoy the rest of your night.

Chelsea lift the trophy

Joy for Chelsea, despair for City. It's hard to tell what Frank Lampard must make of all this, his beloved Chelsea lifting the ultimate prize after dispensing with his services halfway through the season. Tuchel came back a year later and went one better, winning the final at the second attempt. Cesar Azpilicueta lifts the Champions League to the dulcet tones of Freddie Mercury (not Radio Gag Ga sadly) and they have been worthy winners on the night. The second European Cup in Chelsea's history and the first since 2012.

Delight for Havertz

Chelsea were magnificent tonight but you have to wonder whether they would have scored the goal they did had Guardiola fielded a holding midfielder. Tuchel's team were magnificent, not least the peerless Kante. Havertz with his first goal in the Champions League and he celebrates by thanking family members on camera like an emotional Oscar winner. When asked about whether he's justified the money Chelsea spent on him, he responds with some magnificently fruity language for which Des Kelly is forced to apologise. Advertisement

Chelsea have won the Champions League

Full time: Mahrez goes close with seconds remaining but, for the second time in their history, Chelsea are champions of Europe! Tuchel has outwitted Guardiola for the third time this season and restricted City to just one shot on target over the 90 minutes. The Chelsea manager spent the closing stages trying to get the fans going and he just got everything right on the day. Havertz's goal is enough and Aguero exits City unable to bring home the ultimate prize.

Seven added minutes

90 minutes: Astonishing scenes as the fourth official announces there will be a further seven minutes of this final. Moments earlier Dias whipped the ball across the face of the goal but Christensen slid in brilliantly to avert the danger. This is tense!

Aguero involved late on

86 minutes: Chelsea have been so solid here, City have struggled to break them down all night. Aguero's first real involvement sees him try to loft the ball across the box towards a waiting Foden but it's a simple catch for Mendy. Time is running out for the Premier League champions. A glorious ball from Walker is just beyond Aguero as the seconds keep ticking away.

Kovacic on for Mount

80 minutes: Mount looks understandably disappointed to come off but Tuchel reckons Kovacic is the best bet for what remains of this final.

Aguero makes his final appearance for City

77 minutes: Enter Aguero. Arguably the greatest player in the club's history replaces Sterling and let's see if he can make history once more. This is tense and you sense it could go either way.

Pulisic goes close

73 minutes: Mahrez whips one into the Chelsea area low and hard but Azpilicueta manages to get back and divert the ball over the bar with an imperious bit of defending. City have shown glimpses but it'd be a stretch to say they're knocking on the door. A brilliant break from Chelsea culminates in the American substitute attempting to dink the ball over the keeper but he watches the ball sail wide. A huge let-off for Guardiola and his side.

Enter Pulisic

66 minutes: Both teams with changes, Fernandinho coming on for Bernardo Silva for City while Pulisic becomes the first American to take part in a Champions League final as he replaces a disappointing Werner. He'd kick himself for that performance but he'd no doubt miss.

City penalty appeal turned down

62 minutes: The City players and supporters with a big shout for a penalty for a handball by James. The referee immediately says no and VAR confirms he was right to do so. Advertisement

Rudiger booked and De Bruyne hobbles off

59 minutes: Kante with a stunning challenge on De Bruyne just as the Belgian was shaping to shoot. Guardiola's team have hardly threatened since the interval and you have to feel a change should be in the offing sooner rather than later. Tuchel will be absolutely thrilled with the way this game is unfolding. Rudiger receives a yellow card for a body check on De Bruyne and he can have no complaints there. De Bruyne has had a difficult night and he's in some discomfort as he hobbles down the tunnel and is replaced by Gabriel Jesus.

City kept at arm' s length

50 minutes: Walker swings one in from the right but it's a simple catch for Mendy. One wonders how long until we see Aguero appear for one last time in the sky blue of City. Just 53% of possession for City so far tonight, almost unheard of under Guardiola and a testament to the way Chelsea have gone about their business here.

The second half is underway

47 minutes: The Gallagher brothers look furious in the stands but no word on the thoughts of Blur's Damon Albarn, a Chelsea supporter since his youth. It was a brilliant first half and we can only hope for more of the same. Sterling looks isolated up top and Guardiola will be hoping he can make a difference in the second half.

Half-time Manchester City 0 Chelsea 1

This could not have gone better for Tuchel and his side. They've largely kept City at bay and taken a big chance at the end of the half after Werner's misses earlier in the game. A huge 45 in store and City will have to do it the hard way if they are to win their first Champions League final. Guardiola disappears down the tunnel and he has some thinking to do here.Load more updates
