Although known for being in Mario's shadow, Luigi has gained a lot of popularity and many fans actually prefer him to the red-hatted hero. Although Luigi wasn't much besides a palette swap for Mario in the early days, that changed as the games went on. Luigi established his own identity as a heroic, but cowardly character. In Luigi's Mansion, the title character traverses a spooky mansion in search of his captured brother. In the Mario & Luigi RPG series, Luigi almost always accompanies Mario. One of the biggest running jokes there is how unpopular Luigi is with outside residents. Even Bowser's henchman called Luigi "Mr. Green Mario Brother Guy." Clearly, Nintendo was having a little fun.
