5 Best Marvel Fighting Games to Play & 5 Worst to Avoid

Marvel has created a wide offering for gamers over the years, from MCU tie-ins, to several stand-alones, here are the good, the bad, and the ugly. Comic books are a fantastic way to tell stories of heroes and villains greater than ourselves duking it out in breathtaking ways, letting the imagination fill in the blanks rather than the hundreds of millions of dollars needed to do the same for movies or video games. Despite this, plenty of games have tried to replicate the epicness of iconic heroes and villains. While some have nailed every aspect of what makes the Marvel universe so rich and exhilarating, other titles throw all that sense of wonder away to make a quick buck. Here are the best Marvel fighting games to can try today and the absolute worse ones that should never be played. THEGAMER VIDEO OF THE DAY

Best X-Men Origins Wolverine

via megagames.com Movie tie-in video games are rarely good. They either focus too much on replicating the film they are loosely based on, or they instead take massive creative liberties to the point where the player wonders how it relates to the film. Luckily, suffers from none of those problems—the game, anyway. Its repetitive gameplay might bore some, but the endearing amounts of gore and over the top action make this title hard to put down until you beat it.

Worst Iron Man

There might not be much time spent punching people in Iron Man, a video game based off of its similarly named movie, but there will be a lot of time spent fighting the controls. Flying is awkward and overly clunky. The enemy AI is laughably bad and poses no threat. Missions repeat the same formula of heading to a waypoint to blow something up. The customization players had over their gear each mission was nice, but only serves as a novelty for an otherwise maddening movie licensed video game.

Best Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3

How could top Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, one of the best fighting games made for arcades and home consoles alike? Simple: give as many characters and modes as fans want. The original release suffered from a lack of characters and modes, something which the Ultimate edition remedies to great effect. Each character plays differently from the last, and plenty of interesting modes both online and offline will keep players busy for hundreds of hours.

Worst Thor God of Thunder

There isn't much to say about this obvious cash grab. It is a rather poor excuse for a third-person fighting game, lacking any passion or genuine fun factor in its design or gameplay. Locations consist of boring, uninspired backgrounds filled with the same basic enemies reskinned to fit into the bland world they're set in. A skill tree tries to add variety and player progression into the game, but the choices rarely matter as the core combat is floaty and unimpactful. Don't even bother playing this game.

Best Spider-Man 2

Until on Playstation 4 released, this was the best Spider-Man game and truly made players feel like the iconic Marvel hero. Swinging from rooftop to rooftop is exhilarating, providing the right sense of momentum and weight. Combat is rather simple, but it is satisfying enough and gets the job done. The various crimes that can occur in this life-sized city, combined with the aforementioned movement, make this one of the best superhero games ever made, and easily one of the best Marvel fighting and open-world titles ever released.

Worst X-Men Destiny

This game could have been one of the best Marvel games ever. It could have been one of the best superhero games made. Alas, this remains as a disappointing reminder of what could have been. Combat revolves around mashing buttons to damage people, leaving combat repetitive and generic. The choices present in the story mean absolutely nothing and impact nothing. Worst, however, it just how buggy and unfinished this title is. If this game had a few more years of development, this could have been an amazing game. It's such a shame.

Best Marvel Ultimate Alliance

Not many games let fans play with and X-Men at the same time. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is one of those games. Players control a team of superheroes, allowing for up to 4 members in a squad at a time. Each character has unique attacks, costumes, and dialogue. Alternate endings exist for players who explore all the game has to offer, giving plenty of replay value to fans of Marvel games. It also has a fantastic sequel for those who want more of this type of gameplay.

Worst Marvel Nemesis Rise of the Imperfects

Fighting games rely on either or great AI in singleplayer missions. Unfortunately, Marvel Nemesis is lacking both. Visual fidelity is muddy and holds a rather odd art style for the type of game it is. This isn't much of an issue. What is, however, is how unfair the AI is, spamming overpowered abilities at the player to quickly kill them. This game just isn't fun. Lackluster multiplayer couldn't save the lacking singleplayer either. At least it isn't a movie licensed tie-in.

Best Marvel s Spider-Man

It might be somewhat unfair to put such a recent title into a list and rank it this high, but it is well justified. Insomniac's superhero title is one of the best ever released. Combat in this game is leagues better than in Spider-Man 2, taking many cues from the Batman Arkham series of games. Web-based powers are woven seamlessly with core combat and also allow for some downright exhilarating open-world traversal. The story is pretty good as well, making this one of the best Marvel fighting titles to ever release. It's just a shame this game is a PS4 exclusive. Hopefully, be available on multiple platforms.

Worst Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer

What can be worse than an uninspired fighting game? A bad, uninspired, movie-licensed fighting game. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, unfortunately, ticks all of those boxes. Unlike previous entries, this game commits the biggest sin any video game can possibly commit: it isn't fun. No matter what a player tries, there is no innovation or unique mechanics to make this game stand out. It does stand out in how laughably dated it looks, even for the time when it originally released. Combat is repetitive and lazy, the story is loosely based on the movie and does nothing interesting, and the overall polish of the game is not there. This is easily one of the worst games made in recent memory.
