The Legend of Zelda 5 Characters Every Fan Loves & 5 They Hate A Little Too Much

The Legend of Zelda has hosted many beloved fan favorite characters, but there are a select few fans might hate a bit too much. Here are five of each. The creative and expansive worlds within have evolved from bare-bones landscapes filled with enemies and an occasional NPC to sprawling worlds hosting lovable and memorable casts of characters. We've come a long way from weird old men in caves with a few lines of dialogue and a sword to give. With 30 years of Zelda in our hands, we've met countless shopkeepers, townsfolk, princesses, and heroes, either held dear by many or left in the dust. There are some definite fan favorites within the series and some characters that fans give a bit too much hate. THEGAMER VIDEO OF THE DAY

LOVED Makar

It's difficult to call most escort missions "fun", but helping out this tiny leaf friend can't help but bring out a smile. In The Wind Waker, our Hero of Winds is quite a short fellow, to begin with, but Makar doesn't even reach half his height. You can't help but feel bad when exploring the Wind Temple, seeing Makar struggle to keep up with his adorably tiny legs, only to be swept up by a pesky Floormaster. Some may argue that he's a bit unexpressive due to his mask, but this lovable, determined Korok speaks a thousand words through his violin alone.

HATED Groose

Imagining the beginning of Skyward Sword as a typical high school drama, Groose is the prime example of an arrogant, selfish bully who only exists to make Link's life difficult. If Link left his pockets unguarded, it isn't out of the question to say that Groose would happily steal his lunch Rupees. It's understandable to see the reasoning behind Groose's disdain, but he really evolves as a person throughout your journey, becoming an invaluable ally against The Imprisoned. Groose goes from zero to hero, risking his life to aid Link and Zelda versus the reincarnation of evil itself.

LOVED Beedle

In Hyrules riddled with murderous monsters or treacherous seas, nothing will ever get in the way of Beedle's sheer determination and unwavering will. Beedle first appears in The Wind Waker, where he travels the seas and aids link with bait, bombs, treasure maps, or . In Skyward Sword, Beedle holds the record for strongest legs in all of Skyloft as he endlessly peddles through the air in his flying shop. Where Beedle really shines, though, is in Breath of the Wild's dilapidated Hyrule. He traverses the enormous country on foot with a backpack that must weigh more than him. He even gives Link frequent discounts and compliments, never once letting anything get in his way. Godspeed, Beedle.

HATED Ilia

Like Groose, Ilia's character takes a while to get going, and it can feel like an eternity with Twilight Princess's . Ilia serves as Link's childhood friend and potential love interest in Ordon Village before she's quickly kidnapped, sparking the beginning of your adventure. She's a bit entitled, being the mayor's daughter and all, and she doesn't refrain from angrily unloading on Link for pushing Epona too hard. She obviously cares about her loved ones, especially when you see her again in Kakariko Village. She may have a few rough edges, but she isn't just another crazy horse-girl.

LOVED Ravio

Never has there been a more helpful and kind shopkeeper than this lovable, home-invading, mysterious man. At the beginning of A Link Between Worlds, this purple-clad fellow just needed a place to stay, and Link was kind enough to lend his barely used home. However, Ravio quickly spotted the monetary opportunities of Link's conveniently placed residence smack dab in the middle of Hyrule, and Ravio's shop came to fruition. You'll be visiting Ravio a lot throughout your adventure, as he often has important items that you'll need to progress the story. They don't come without a price, but you gotta make a living somehow.

HATED Princess Ruto

After completing some sidequests and eventually gaining access to Jabu Jabu's Belly, the paradise of Zora's Domain is but a far off dream within the pulsating, disgusting insides of a giant fish. This is all made worse by Princess Ruto, who, despite your frivolous attempts at rescuing her, still makes your job as hard as possible. If you thought you could escape her wrath over seven years of sleeping, you'd be sorely mistaken. In the infamous Water Temple, she returns convinced that you're her "fiancé," haunting you even after the downfall of Hyrule. While similar to an itch that won't go away, Ruto is at least thankful for Link's endeavors, even when trying to force a marriage.

LOVED Prince Sidon

This particularly tall Zora Prince is one step away from "let's catch some waves, dude". Sidon is the biggest bromance contender within Breath of the Wild, with a more than a friendly attitude and a smile that'll make you drop dead. Unlike Ruto, Sidon's presence is always welcome, lifting the mood of around him. He holds Link in high regard, confidently assisting him in infiltrating the massive Vah Ruta to take down Waterblight Ganon. There's nothing more refreshing to hear in the heat of combat than, "Oh, by the way, there are a few spots up ahead with lots of enemies... but I'm sure you will be fine! I believe in you, Link!"

HATED Kaepora Gaebora

Possibly one of the most hated characters in gaming history, Kaepora Gaebora is only trying to guide Link in the right direction, held back by a few questionable game design choices. He serves as the role of Link's mentor through such a grand world, as he is only 9 years old after all. While he's caused many players to cycle through the same, slow text boxes for minutes on end, some of his advice is actually extremely helpful, like guiding Link to the Sacred Forest Meadow. Although, his assistance is unfortunately overshadowed by many broken A buttons and frustrated players.

LOVED Midna

After you're abruptly thrust into the Realm of Twilight following the loss of your friends and village, all hope seems lost, until this mischievous imp comes to your aid. At first, she seems to only be using you for her own personal mission of collecting the Fused Shadow, but she quickly grows on Link and becomes his inseparable ally. After Link hurries a half-dead Midna to the rescue of Princess Zelda, her character drastically changes into someone determined to help her friend, and Hyrule's hero. At their eternal departure, she sheds a sorrowful tear to forever break the link between Hyrule and the Shadow Realm.

HATED Fi

Out of all the companion characters in the series, Fi often gets the most flack. She's emotionless, uninteresting, and ultimately hurts the game's progression and sense of adventure from her constant "hints" and blatantly telling you where to go and what to do next. In addition to these things, she'll nonchalantly break the fourth wall to let you know of your Wii remote's low battery for the tenth time in a row. All of these factors are understandable to see why she's so resented, but people often forget about her slow but sweet character progression. She's essentially a robotic manifestation of the Master Sword, but through her time spent with Link she learns the basis of emotions, describing it as "the most precious data (she has) on record."
