The Big Bang Theory 25 Things About Sheldon That Make No Sense
Everyone knows Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory, but not a lot of people realize how little sense he makes. Where would The Big Bang Theory be without Sheldon Cooper? The neurotic nerd is the reason for the show’s booming success for over a decade. Without him, there would be no charm resonating from the show despite the other characters’ likability. Sheldon is the breakout star for The Big Bang Theory and the secret for its longevity; Jim Parsons earns every dollar of the cool $900,000 he makes per episode. One could dedicate theses to the odd behaviors Sheldon has displayed over the years. No one can quite put their finger on exactly what plagues this guy that makes him who he is. But as far as we know he’s not crazy, his mother had him tested. What we have done is embrace Sheldon for all his eccentric habits and laughed along the antics he has entertained us with. Sitcoms don’t make much sense in general. The conflicts we see in the sitcom world are cases that would be solved by minor conversations, and yet there are issues that last several episodes or seasons in this land. The Big Bang Theory hasn’t kept continuity as its best friend–and hasn’t needed to, either–due to which there are several inconsistencies in its characters’ initial and later personalities. Sheldon suffers greatly from early installment weirdness–a trope that is found in characters whose personalities aren’t set until after a few episodes since the pilot. Before the characters are set in their attributes, they display characteristics you wouldn’t expect them to show. Sheldon embodies this trope and you will find many inconsistencies he has been host to in the list below. THEGAMER VIDEO OF THE DAY Sheldon Wasn t Very Protective Of His Spot At First
via facebook.com In the series pilot, Penny’s distress caused Leonard to offer her a spot on his and Sheldon’s couch; the spot Sheldon reserves for himself at all times. In this scene, we can see Sheldon being troubled by Penny occupying his spot, but what’s lacking is his hostility toward her which should have manifested once Penny sat on the couch. In later episodes, Sheldon has no patience for anyone sitting in his spot. Flashbacks to times before the pilot reveal he had reserved the spot then as well, and offered no exception to anyone to occupy it. In the pilot, though, he is quite congenial to Penny and shows no aggression. Lowering His Inhibitions
via youtube.com Sheldon usually maintains his reluctance to indulge in any substances or fluids that would lower his inhibitions or heighten them; such as caffeine. However, we have seen him break this rule on a number of occasions by this point. In the pilot alone Sheldon had indulged in a round of drinks with his friends while having lunch, while in later episodes–when his dislike of these things is stated–he still makes exceptions. Scenarios to support this would include partaking in some swilling with Bernadette’s father, during Howard’s bachelor party, and several times on a casual basis. Thus, when he makes clear his distaste for such drinks he isn’t really being honest, is he? He Is A Really Bad Friend
via cbs.com Sheldon is hands down the most popular character on the show. Without him, the fanbase would lose interest and the show would be cancelled. However, his antics are only cute when viewed on a TV show, as a real man being the kind of person Sheldon is would be the worst. He has attempted to sabotage his friends’ success on numerous occasions. Always out of spite, Sheldon doesn’t take it well when his friends or girlfriend become more successful than him, or if they should acquire something he had an eye out for. In these times, Sheldon has no self-control, and rather than being happy for his friends, he goes out of his way to ruin it for them. Detecting Sarcasm
via pinterest.com With Sheldon, everything is a work in progress. He has great difficulties understanding societal practices and is clueless in a situation which any normal person would find second nature. One of these is his lack of sarcasm detection. On many instances he has shown ignorance of sarcastic remarks toward him, which is played for laughs. But there is also the truth that Sheldon has, on many occasions, been able to identify a sarcastic jab and react appropriately toward it. He has also been known to be sarcastic toward people. His trademark “Bazinga” usually is a sarcastic joke that he makes clear to others (despite know one needing him to). Doesn t Shut Up Until He Does
via newscult.com It’s not easy to make Sheldon Cooper keep his trap shut. Most of the earlier episode especially the first three seasons–concerned with Sheldon freaking out about a menial issue, and with no one able to control him. Only when some unorthodox solution came by did Sheldon drop his rants. As it is, it’s not all that difficult to quiet him down. In certain episodes, all one has to do is to tell him to “Go away” and he acquiesces without much argument. Similarly, when the situation calls for him to be silent definitively, he doesn’t object; such as when the guys told him not to a utter word when pitching their idea to the military. Dancing Switch
via youtube.com In an early season episode, Sheldon had claimed he would never be seen dancing with anyone. This aligned with his character as he never looked like a guy who would ever be interested in locking up with another person in close proximity and move himself to and fro to music. When his romance with Amy began taking its first steps, however, we were treated to an impressive set of skills that Sheldon possessed as he and Amy would own the dance floor. This still clashed with his earlier statement of not having any interest in dancing. He’s got some moves! Using Internet Explorer
via imgflip.com Sheldon has always been condescending toward anyone or anything he views as slow or inferior in quality. This includes people, Masters Degrees, institutions, Howard Wolowitz and technology. So, it wouldn’t be likely you could catch him using anything that isn’t considered state of the art. This screenshot would beg to differ. Here, Sheldon is in the midst of some background checking on Stuart, and what browser is he using? That would be Internet Explorer. The browser is considered the worst out of all available online, with Explorer’s speed being among the worst you could find. Then why would Sheldon of all people rely on it? Getting Beat In Science On A Regular Basis
via youtube.com Sheldon’s proficiency at science is more of an informed ability than an evident attribute. We are told he is this genius sought after by leading universities worldwide–and at a very young age–but he doesn’t display these characteristics very often to be believable. In several episodes he has been upstaged in Science by Raj, Leonard, Leslie Winkle, and even a Janitor in a quiz battle. If he was supposed to be second to none, Sheldon shouldn’t have been defeated by ordinary scientists on such a regular basis. On many occasions, he has been bested by Average Joes like Penny as well. His Financial Status
via pinterest.com Sheldon’s expenses mainly revolve around his interest in pop culture memorabilia. His apartment was decorated by these possessions, and it was understood that he spent a fair amount on these items. He should still be able to live by himself, though. In one episode, he explained to Penny that a majority of his income went into his savings, which means that he should be well adjusted to live by himself. However, Sheldon claimed that he only got a roommate out of necessity and he would much rather prefer to live alone. Clearly, the genius isn’t all that great at managing his finances. Lack Of Development From Young Sheldon
via cbs.com The very idea of Young Sheldon should have raised concerns over the inevitability of the show’s premise falling flat by the end of its run, whenever that may be. This is because all of the character development that Sheldon, and his family, go through stands for nothing. Whatever might happen on Young Sheldon, the boy will still go on to be a loner in his early 20s, will be estranged from his siblings, have no real appreciation for the sacrifices his family has made for him, and have no regard for his friends’ efforts toward him. Thus, any heartfelt moment you see on Young Sheldon stands for nothing. His Bully Is Also His Father
via imgflip.com Yeah, Yeah, we know these are all actors and the characters aren’t supposed to be the same person, but from the point of view of people who don’t follow entertainment news it must have been a surprise to see little Sheldon’s father’s likeness to the guy who bullied him in adulthood. A Season 5 episode of The Big Bang Theory saw Leonard’s old school bully chase after Sheldon to give him a piece of his mind, and this same actor plays Sheldon’s father on Young Sheldon. In-universe, shouldn’t Sheldon’s eidetic memory have sprung up to him after seeing his father alive and well? Not Reporting On Barry Kripke
via pinterest.com Sheldon doesn’t take pranks the way most other people do. For him, being made fun of means a lifetime of vendetta toward the aggressor; Wil Wheaton can attest to that. Barry Kripke played a prank on him that involved helium in order to alter Sheldon’s voice to humorous levels. Knowing Sheldon, he would have retaliated by reporting Kripke to the authorities as dangerous levels of helium could have poisoned him. Getting Barry fired would’ve been a win for Sheldon, but he never thought about it. Instead, Sheldon opted to do nothing. It only took prodding from Raj and Leonard for him to act and get back at Kripke; although that didn’t work out so well. Breaking The Roommate Agreement
via youtube.com Building up on the above point, Sheldon follows the law rigidly as part of his principles. Just like the previous point, here he also overlooked his characteristic qualities and ignored several points that should have been in place as part of his “law” of the roommate agreement. He would regularly break many of the rules set by this agreement. As pointed out by Raj’s sister, Priya (the worst character ever on the show, by the way), Sheldon did not meet several criteria in place within the roommate agreement. Wouldn’t that bother him, though? Considering he has such an itch to follow his own rules, it’s surprising that breaking them doesn’t have any effect on him. The Sudden Love For His Mommy
via cbs.com In the first few episodes of The Big Bang Theory, Sheldon was seen talking to his mother on the phone. In these exchanges, Sheldon had little to no patience for the woman and would attempt to finish the conversation as quickly as possible. This wasn’t the same loving exasperation he would display later. While still at odds with her due to her faith, he would be exasperated with her only when the topic came up. In the initial episodes, however, Sheldon did not seem to care for her much. When Leonard called her up in Season 1, he was livid. In Season 5, though, a visit from her sent him over the moon with joy. Where did this sudden love come from? Backtracking On Character Development
via youtube.com Sheldon is the worst when it comes to dealing with change. When it was pointed out to him by Leonard how much he had changed thanks to Amy, Sheldon went over to her place to break up with her due to his reluctance to accept himself as a changed man. Even worse backtracking to this was when he left for months in between Season 7 and Season 8 to deal with the change in his lifestyle due to Leonard and Penny’s engagement, only to return for a couple seconds and withdraw back after checking out Penny’s new hairdo. Although this was played for laughs, it forms part of Sheldon’s repeated lack of development as many of his annoying characteristics have remained despite many episodes dedicated toward rectifying them. Bill Gates Inconsistency
via seat42f.com In a recent episode, Sheldon made numerous attempts to meet up with Bill Gates but was unable to do so due to Leonard always handing him the wrong address. Sheldon’s enthusiasm was baffling, mainly due to the previously mentioned event where he had insulted Bill Gates to this degree–over Windows Vista–that the billionaire had landed a punch on him. This also presents a plot hole for the other members of the group. Leonard outright cried after meeting Bill Gates, but he shouldn’t have been this emotional if he had met the man, and witnessed him punch his best friend, previously. Forgetting Joyce Kim s Departure
via youtube.com Before Season 3, Leonard’s former flame, Joyce Kim, was mentioned frequently when bringing up the topic of his dating history. Each time, the demise of the relationship was attributed to her defecting back to Korea. So when Joyce was seen in the flesh in a flashback in Season 3, it was thought that we would see just how she went back to her homeland. This, however, opened up some inconsistencies. Sheldon was the one responsible for the dissolution of the “relationship” as he annoyed her so much she fled the apartment. But if Sheldon has an eidetic memory, shouldn’t he remember that Joyce didn’t defect to Korea and that he had a part in her leaving? Breaking His Weekly Schedules
via youtube.com Sheldon’s habitual tendencies spark the ire of all his friends; who have generally come to accept this aspect about him. But Sheldon himself sucks at keeping up with his supposedly permanent weekly schedules. Firstly, we see him partake in different activities time and again, ignoring his what-should-be locked in practice for that hour. Then there are the inconsistencies where he mentions something he is about to do, but according to his schedule he shouldn’t be. For instance, Saturday morning is Doctor Who hour and the previous night he had been playing Halo. Halo night, though, is supposed to fall on a Wednesday; so what’s up with that? His Cat Allergy
via screenrant.com In an earlier episode, Leonard is depressed at finding Penny dating another man and states his desire to get a cat in order to cope with his depression. In a throwaway dialogue, Leonard assures Sheldon he has considered the latter’s allergies before making the decision. When Sheldon himself was depressed at losing Amy’s friendship in Season 4, he went overboard and adopted a truckload of kitties for the apartment; even calling one of them, “Zazzles.” If he was supposed to be allergic, how could Sheldon be A-okay with an apartment full of these felines? The cats shared his bed during this time, too. Did he create a cure for allergies during his depression? Germaphobe Inconsistencies
via imgflip.com Any germaphobe would agree it is a battle to go outside and make contact with exposed surfaces that might be riddled with diseases. Sheldon is no different to this and regularly ensures he is properly sanitized. However, Sheldon has frequented between his reluctance to go to the hospital and gladly visiting it. In Season 2, he skips a day at work to annoy Leonard’s new doctor girlfriend at her workplace; displaying no problems with the environment. Later on, he was terrified of hospitals due to the abundance of germs they carried, even refusing to touch a single door in the building. Since then, he has flip-flopped between his fear and willingness to return to the hospital.
