Having Arrived on all devices on March 10th, the Finnish developer Improx Games brings players their second indie release. Join an epic experience that will challenge your brain and help save a planet. So, how is the newest Improx Games release? Find out in our review of The Last Cube. Story A great idea but with only barebones execution
In the Last Cube, you will step into the six-sided role of the last cube. On a mission to its homeworld to a race of sentient cubes on the brink of collapse, our hero, the cube charged by their ancestors, must travel to each side and repair the damage before it’s too late. Our hero must solve puzzles of increasing difficulty to do so. There is little to the story. However, as the players solve each of the puzzles, they will be able to take small side trips. Here, players can do a bit of extra puzzle-solving and acquire lore entries that will clue the player into the different places in the cube world, the background story of the cube world, and the mechanics. Unfortunately, the Last Cube is more of a display of gameplay versus story. With lore items being the only way for a player to learn about the story of the cube homeworld, the story of The Last Cube feels empty. So, players looking for a plot and story as they play will be hard-pressed to find it. In our review of the Last Cube we’ll tell you that if a well-designed plot is something you’re looking for, you may want to look elsewhere. Gameplay Challenging puzzles and smooth controls in The Last Cube
The gameplay of The Last Cube is reasonably straightforward but still will offer a significant amount of depth. Using basic controls moving the cube in four directions, as the cube moves throughout the stage, there will be various pads laid tactically throughout. Each of these pads is set in a corresponding stamp and color and will offer a different power-up. By having the stamp face up, the player can then activate the power of the stamp. These powers are tactically used as the player helps the last cube make its way. Continuing through the different sides will allow the player to use new stamps and continue to use the previously found ones. More stamps will mean more powers to solve the puzzles making them more complex. Controlling our hero and using the various stamps is a smooth and easy experience, with no bugs or glitches during play. Between the stages and powers, the puzzles of The Last Cube offer gameplay that is entertaining and satisfying as you figure out and complete each stage and help the hero restore its homeworld. Graphics Audio Improx Games build a beautiful lonely world
Our hero’s homeworld in The Last Cube is gorgeous. The players will move through the different districts, each with its themes. The level design is fantastic with well-thought paths and sceneries, making your way through forests, caves, and volcanic areas. Even with a small team, they manage to deliver a game with smooth and beautiful visuals. Improx Games does just as well with the audio, pairing the graphics with a pleasant ambient audio experience. Using mellow electronic music gave the vibe of a lonely world devoid of the beings that inhabited the cube world. Likewise, the audio of The Last Cube does well to help establish the tone of what is happening within our hero’s homeworld. Between the audio and visuals, the developers of Improx Games do a fantastic job at delivering a beautiful experience. In addition, the small team from Finland does a stellar job bringing to life this world for players to enjoy, which is worth checking out. Conclusion A brilliant puzzle-solving game
The Improx Games release The Last Cube is a fantastic puzzle game from the small indie development team. At the same time, there is a lot to be desired from a story mainly told through lore items. However, the rest of The Last Cube makes up for the deficit with stellar gameplay with straightforward controls and lots of depth and challenge. Packaged into a beautifully designed world and matching audio, the player will have much to enjoy as they work their minds and solve the various puzzles that The Lost Cube has to offer. With our review of the Improx Games release The Last Cube, we can certainly recommend this game if you’re looking for a fun puzzle-solving adventure that will also challenge your mind. If you’re interested in picking up The Last Cube, it’s available on Steam, Xbox One & Series XS, PlayStation 4 & 5, and Nintendo Switch for $19.99. Additionally, more information about The Last Cube can be found on the game product page. Tags: IndieGameTheLastCube Previous Arise A Simple Story Will Have Exclusive Features On Nintendo Switch
