Late last month, McLaren teased its first-ever SUV, albeit one meant for off-road racing rather than mainstream markets. This came as something of a shock, but it should be no surprise that the financially unstable creator of Ferrari-rivaling supercars would be keen to gauge the reactions of its biggest fans before introducing something that could solve its liquidity problems. Speaking of which, it was incorrectly reported last week that McLaren would be taken over by Audi, something that the Woking-based supercar company was quick to deny. However, a merger with the German giant is not completely off the table, and that got us thinking: What if McLaren created an SUV based on the Audi RS Q8? CarBuzz CarBuzz Such a thing may seem grotesque and unnatural, but Ferrari is set to launch its own SUV in the Purosangue, and the Bentayga has helped Bentley shift thousands more units and generate millions more in revenue just as the Cayenne before it did for Porsche. If McLaren is to be taken over by a mainstream automaker like Audi or BMW, it would make sense for the British brand to rummage in its new partner's parts bins to save money on development costs. Thus, we imagine McLaren's first SUV being something trendy, launching with a sloped roofline a-la Lamborghini Urus, Aston Martin DBX, et al. Lamborghini Bentley Aston Martin Porsche While the RS Q8 has a mightily impressive engine to offer, it is proliferated across the aforementioned SUV offerings from other VW-owned brands. If McLaren wants its SUV to stand out from the crowd, it needs to provide a unique experience, and making its 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 work in an SUV could be a start down the right path. Obviously, it would make no sense for the engine to be a masterpiece if the big Mac can't put its power down, so we predict that the McLaren SUV will be the brand's first car with all-wheel drive. Yes, this is all rather disappointing to contemplate, and an obnoxious super crossover is not something we want in this world, but if it means saving McLaren from financial ruin, we'll grin and bear it. Last week, ABT Sportsline presented the RS Q8-S as a successor to the limited-edition RS Q8-R. The regular Audi RS Q8 is already one of the most potent SUVs on the market with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 producing 591 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque, but ABT cranked it up to 740 hp and 678 lb-ft. If you thought Audi's super SUV couldn't get any more extreme, then think again because German tuner MTM has taken it to the next level. With the aftermarket tuner's Stage 4 tuning kit installed, the RS Q8's output is boosted to an insane 1,001 horsepower and 921 lb-ft of torque, making it the most powerful RS Q8 we've seen yet. MotorOliTV/YouTube MotorOliTV/YouTube In stock form, the RS Q8 will hit 0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds, which is impressive for a large SUV. MTM hasn't revealed any performance specifications, but it's safe to say this behemoth will hit 60 mph from a standstill a few tenths of a second faster. To see what it can do, MotorOliTV took the modified RS Q8 for a performance run on the German autobahn at night. On an empty stretch of autobahn, the RS Q8 reached a top speed of 329 km/h according to the GPS - that's 203 mph. With ceramic brakes, the standard RS Q8 will top out at 190 mph, so the performance boost has made a huge improvement. MotorOliTV/YouTube MotorOliTV/YouTube Whereas ABT's RS Q8 wears an aggressive body kit with an array of aero upgrades, the exterior modifications on this modified RS Q8 are surprisingly subtle. Compared to the standard model, MTM's RS Q8 rides a few inches closer to the ground, giving it a sportier stance. Other than that, there are no obvious enhancements, making this a true sleeper SUV. It even still rides on standard factory 23-inch wheels and doesn't have any MTM badging that tells people this is no ordinary RS Q8. There are no pricing details, but expect to pay a huge premium for this level of performance over the stock RS Q8, which starts at $114,500. Hennessey is very proud of its astonishing Venom F5 hypercar and recently showed us around the details of the car's intricate design. As much as we enjoyed watching that video, the one we saw back in April when the Venom F5 was cruising at 200 mph was even more satisfying. If you're one of the lucky few that managed to order one, you'll soon be able to drink in those details and experience that exhilaration in person, as the American house of horsepower has announced that deliveries have begun. The first example of the Hennessey Venom F5 has just been delivered, and it looks absolutely resplendent in that rich yellow hue. https://twitter.com/HennesseyPerf/status/1462646402178162692 Hennessey Hennessey Hennessey The color is called Mojave Gold and was shown off in the sun at Monterey Car Week in Pebble Beach earlier this year. Other colors one could choose from included Speed Devil Blue and Blue Arione. But if you're wondering how you should spec your own Hennessey Venom F5, don't even bother. Hennessey announced back in August that the last few examples were snapped up at Monterey Car week. We don't know who ordered this particular car, but with the garage also housing the Porsche 918 Spyder, Ferrari LaFerrari, and McLaren P1, you can bet that the commissioner of this spec didn't need finance. Hopefully, the company will release more images of various customer specifications so we can get an idea of what combinations this hypercar is available in, but for now, let's reflect on the blistering performance offered by this $2.1 million American monster. Hennessey Performance Hennessey Hennessey Performance In the middle of the chassis lies a 6.6-liter twin-turbo V8 producing a stupendous 1,817 horsepower and 1,193 lb-ft of torque. Hennessey's goal for the car is very clear: go faster than 311 mph (500 kph) and become the outright fastest production car on the planet. To do that, it will need to fend off competition from the likes of Koenigsegg with the Jesko Absolut and SSC with its Tuatara. If the Venom F5 fails, Hennessey could take another shot at the crown with a hardcore GTR version. If that comes to fruition, you'd better act fast. High-end machinery like this does not stay unsold for very long. Two vastly different cars. Outside of Bugatti and its range of insanely powerful monsters like the Chiron, France isn't often associated with hypercars or track-oriented machines. Rather, the likes of Citroen and Renault continue to churn out quirky and sophisticated compacts that sell strongly in Europe. But something quite special has just emanated from France in the form of the Quarkus P1, a lightweight, track-only supercar. When we say lightweight, we mean it - this car weighs a mere 500 kg or 1,102 pounds. It makes even the lithe Mazda MX-5 Miata seem bloated, as the little Japanese roadster is more than twice the weight of the P1. Quarkus Quarkus Revealed this past week by Damien Alfano, the CEO and Founder of Quarkus, the P1's philosophy is at odds with everything Bugatti represents. Here, less is more, and that matters on a track. In a post on LinkedIn, Alfano said that "Quarkus does not make a 2-ton electric tank" in a jibe to pretty much everyone else making heavy EVs right now. At the heart of the P1 is a 1.0-liter turbocharged hybrid engine that makes between 250 and 300 horsepower. Able to rev to 10,000 rpm, it sounds like a riot in a car that weighs so little. That works out to a weight/power ratio of between 3.6 and 4.4 pounds/horsepower. The P1 also has a fully-adjustable chassis and floor links, although no further technical details have been shared yet. Quarkus Quarkus Like many track-only supercars, the P1 is more functional than pretty in appearance. Rather than a traditional hood, there's a cutout where a traditional grille would be that likely does a brilliant job of funneling air over the car's body, making it as slippery as possible. There are no traditional headlights, just slanted daytime running lights. At the back, there's a dramatic wing above two centrally-positioned tailpipes. Alfano said that more details will be revealed in the days ahead, as well as pre-order conditions. The French-built car will be exhibited from 26-30 January in Paris at the Festival Automobile International. The GMC Hummer EV got the "Biden Bump" after the President visited the company's new Factory Zero in Hamtramck, Michigan. According to GM vice president Duncan Aldred, the Hummer had its best month for reservations in November, outside the two launch months in April and October. The website had 230% more visitors than normal, many looking for top tier reservations. "A lot of those hand raisers, about half, have turned into reservations," said Aldred. "The interesting thing is over this period of time the rate of reservations has been pretty steady. Not only high volume of hand raisers and reservations, but pretty much everyone wants the top of the line." GMC GMC GMC GMC explained that the preproduction stage is coming to an end, and that customers deliveries will start in December as planned. Aldred also said that GMC will be making only Edition 1 models through next year. After that the lower-priced, higher range trucks will come along. And those won't be considered heavy duty, with a curb weight mirroring that of an aircraft carrier like the Edition 1. That special model, you'll remember, gets the most powerful battery setup that's good for a 0-60 mph sprint time of just 3 second flat. It also comes standard with the Extreme Off-Road Package, standard underbody shields, rock sliders and 35-inch mud tires. GMC/Barrett-Jackson GMC/Barrett-Jackson GMC/Barrett-Jackson This is the fastest program GM has ever completed, from inception to delivery. And though we'd expect dealers to be a little skittish about updating their showroom and staff to get ready for the EV invasion, they're getting on board. "It kinda happened out of the blue. To come into a project like the Hummer EV, there's been a lot to learn as far as our dealers go," said Aldred. "There's been an investment, that is variable depending on what kind of power source the dealer has. So, we made it an elective distribution, so dealers can join or not. About 2/3 have signed up, most of which did so initially." "I don't think there's ever reluctance, because with a product like the GMC Hummer EV, the world's first supertruck, this is a once in a career, once in a generation time. So to be part of this is an exceptional opportuning the dealers have grabbed with both hands." The results of the J.D. Power 2022 US ALG Residual Value Awards have been revealed. These awards reveal the brands and models that are expected to retain the highest percentage of their value after three years, and points to aspects like vehicle quality and brand recognition. The study also provides a useful research tool when considering the trade-in value of a new car or assessing leasing costs. Honda and Lexus emerged as the brand award winners in the mass market and premium segments, respectively. Last year, Subaru topped the mainstream category and Lexus was also the premium segment's leader. For the 2022 model year, ALG evaluated 29 vehicle segments and 284 models. CarBuzz CarBuzz CarBuzz CarBuzz Interestingly, although Lexus emerged as the best-scoring premium brand, it only had one segment-winning model which was the Lexus NX in the premium compact utility category. However, Lexus consistently scored well across its lineup. Elsewhere, the 2022 Hyundai Accent came out on top in the subcompact car category. The new Honda Civic won for compact car, and the Odyssey bagged another win for Honda in the minivan category. The Ford Bronco put in a strong showing in the off-road utility segment, beating the Jeep Wrangler and Toyota 4Runner. Among premium compact models, the BMW 2 Series came out on top, the brand's only category win. Hyundai Ford CarBuzz In the EV segment, the Hyundai Kona EV and Tesla Model Y had the best resale values in their specific categories. While Ford dominates truck sales, it doesn't have the highest projected resale values here. That goes to the Toyota Tacoma in the midsize segment, the Toyota Tundra in the full-size segment, and the GMC Sierra HD among full-size heavy-duty pickups. "Accurately forecasting residual values in the auto industry is a key factor in assessing an estimated $225 billion lease portfolio of vehicles in the United States," said Eric Lyman, vice president of ALG. "The brands and vehicle models that rise to the top demonstrate that they score well across the award program's criteria, including manufacturers' superior design and quality." We knew it was coming soon and now it's finally arrived. Meet the new 2023 Ford Ranger. Revealed in right-hand-drive configuration, the latest midsize Ranger is a global pickup truck. Aside from possibly a few minor styling differences inside and out, this is the truck America will get. Ford says it sought guidance from customers across the globe during the design and engineering stages. Over 5,000 interviews and dozens of customer workshops were held. They came away with three key focus areas: work, family, and play. Development was led by the Blue Oval's Product Development Center in Australia, a country that knows a thing or two about off-roading. The new exterior has a bold look, featuring a new grille, C-clamp headlights, and enhanced wheel arches. For the first time, matrix LED headlights will be available. Fingers crossed this will be the case for the US, too. The taillights sport a similar styling theme to the headlights.. Ford Ford Three trims are included in the reveal: XLT, Sport, and Wildtrak. Again, these are overseas configurations so US trims will differ to varying degrees. Ford describes the cabin as "car-like" that comes packed with soft-touch materials and a portrait-style 10.1 or optional 12-inch touchscreen running the Sync4 infotainment system. Underneath the tough-looking body lies an upgraded version of the T6 chassis though the wheelbase and track have both been stretched by nearly two inches (50 mm). This allows for a larger bed with an optional cargo management system. The front-end structure is hydro-formed in order to create additional space in the engine bay for a new V6. Ford says that it "helps to future-proof the Ranger for other propulsion technologies." Read: a future all-electric model. That extra space serves another purpose by opening up the truck's front to allow more airflow to the radiator. Ford Ford At launch, three turbo diesel engines will be offered (in Australia): a 3.0-liter turbo diesel V6, and single- and twin-turbo 2.0-liter inline four-cylinders. Specific output figures weren't given though the single turbo will have two levels of power and performance to suit the needs of small businesses and fleet buyers. The engine America is bound to get is the familiar 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder. An updated 10-speed automatic will likely be America's transmission choice, though Australia is getting both a six-speed manual and automatic. Two four-wheel-drive systems, an electronic shift-on-the-fly system, or a full-time 4x4 system are on offer. Nearly 600 factory-backed accessories will be available, depending on the market. The Ram 1500 continues to make its mark on the full-size truck market. So much so that it's been deemed good enough to tow Santa's sleigh and a ton of other festive floats for the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, being held tomorrow morning in New York City. More than 60 trucks and ProMaster commercial vans will be taking part in the annual holiday event that draws millions of viewers and attendees. The Ram 1500 Limited Red Edition has been assigned the specific honor of guiding the white-bearded man's sleigh instead of Rudolph and his reindeer gang. With the semiconductor chip shortage forcing manufacturers to cut production due to supply issues, demand for new and used cars is at an all-time high. Predictably, dealers are taking advantage of the low supply and high demand by charging extortionate markups. Last week, a Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible C8 was spotted for sale by a dealer in Florida for $169,995 - more than twice the MSRP. This means the C8 Corvette now costs Porsche 911 Turbo money. But it's not just sports cars that are being marked up. Dealers are also charging insane markups for mainstream models that are in high demand. https://twitter.com/CStyles45/status/1462231979315937290 Toyota Toyota Case in point: a dealer in Oakland is charging almost $100,000 for a 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime. Normally, Toyota's popular plug-in hybrid SUV will set you back $38,350 for the base model before options are added. This example for sale is based on the top XSE trim, which starts at $41,675 and combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with two electric motors to produce a combined 302 horsepower. But as this photo shared on social media shows, the Toyota Oakland dealer is charging a whopping $96,442 for the RAV4 Prime XSE - comfortably more than double the sticker price. To put this into perspective, that's more than the MSRP of the base Porsche Taycan, which starts at $82,700. Toyota Toyota Until recently, Toyota was largely unaffected by the semiconductor chip shortage as the Japanese automaker had been stockpiling chips. Eventually, however, Toyota's luck ran out, forcing the Japanese automaker to cut global production by 40 percent, and this is the result. However, Toyota's situation is improving in contrast to other automakers. Toyota recently announced production is getting back on track in Japan and will be at full capacity in December for the first time in seven months. Hopefully, it won't be long until production can be ramped up in America too because these outrageous markups will continue until dealer inventories return to normal. Toyota GR Corolla Teaser Reveals More Than You Think CarBuzz News Features New Cars Used Cars Sell My Car Shopping Tools Car Reviews Car Finder Compare Cars Best Cars Car Dealerships Used Car Reviews Car Advice Home News Toyota GR Corolla Teaser Reveals More Than You Think
Toyota GR Corolla Teaser Reveals More Than You Think
Nov. 23, 2021 7:31 PM ET by Jay Traugott Teaser / 6 Comments The wait is nearly over. We've been waiting long enough. Enough with the renderings. Just a little more patience is required. The Toyota GR Corolla hot hatchback will be making its official debut very soon, evidenced by this just-released teaser via the automaker's Instagram account. Don't dismiss it as just a meaningless interior shot because it contains a few cool Easter eggs. Look closely to the right of the speedometer on the gauge cluster and you'll see G:16, a reference to the G16E-GTS turbocharged three-cylinder engine currently found in the (very sadly) overseas-only GR Yaris where it produces an impressive 268 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque (in Europe). It's also paired with a six-speed manual transmission. However, this teaser clearly has an automatic. CarBuzz CarBuzz https://www.instagram.com/p/CVf-8GuA18L/ Though it's very small, there's also a camouflaged GR Corolla in the background at the top right and a GR Four in the nav system, meaning the vehicle will come equipped with an all-wheel drive system with a Torsen limited-slip differential front and rear. Also expect an electronically controlled center differential. Toyota hasn't provided a precise reveal date but it should be coming relatively soon. Quite frankly, we were happily surprised to even see this teaser appear just before the long Thanksgiving weekend gets underway. While American automakers, specifically Ford, have abandoned hot hatches, their Asian rivals continue to embrace them. Toyota/Instagram CarBuzz Along with the GR Corolla, an all-new Honda Civic Type R is just around the corner, and currently on sale is the Hyundai Veloster N. And then there's the one that started it all: the Volkswagen GTI and its more hardcore sibling, the AWD Golf R. Based on these competitors, chances are the Corolla GR, likely a 2023 model, won't cost anything less than $35,000. We wouldn't be surprised to see high demand that'll tempt dealers to add hefty markups. This is probably the beginning of the Corolla GR's teaser campaign so expect more images - hopefully with more hidden details - to come in the weeks ahead. Tesla Cybertruck Reservations Are Worth Billions CarBuzz News Features New Cars Used Cars Sell My Car Shopping Tools Car Reviews Car Finder Compare Cars Best Cars Car Dealerships Used Car Reviews Car Advice Home News Tesla Cybertruck Reservations Are Worth Billions
Tesla Cybertruck Reservations Are Worth Billions
Nov. 24, 2021 9:41 AM ET by Jay Traugott Trucks / 13 Comments So, how about a production start date? It's been exactly two years since the Tesla Cybertruck was revealed. Reservations immediately began pouring in even though a launch date had to be confirmed. Over 250,000 reservations came in the first week alone. As usual with Tesla, there have been delays but the Austin, Texas Gigafactory where the truck will call home is nearing some level of completion. A late 2022 production start is the latest goal. In the meantime, Tesla continues to accept Cybertruck reservations and people's deposits. According to Electrek, Tesla currently has a backlog of around 1.27 million Cybertruck reservations worth at least $80 billion. A majority of reservation holders want the Dual and Tri motor setups as opposed to the entry-level single-motor design. Tesla Tesla Tesla The latter should carry a starting price of $39,000. But the data indicates the average retail price is currently at $58,000. Placing a reservation requires only a $100 refundable deposit. There's no serious commitment on the customer's side, meaning not all reservations will become orders. Still, that significant number of prospective buyers means Tesla needs to get production up and running sooner rather than later. A number of new rivals from legacy automakers are on the one way. One has already debuted and will be on the road this spring: the Ford F-150 Lightning. GM and Ram are expected to follow in 2023. Tesla Tesla Tesla There's also the Rivian R1T which has just begun rolling off the production line. Despite not revealing the Cybertruck in production spec, Tesla still has the greatest number of reservations than any other EV truck to date. But the real determining factor in the EV truck battle is which automaker can achieve volume production and deliveries first. The Rivian is more of a premium niche vehicle due to its $75k price. Ford, as we recently reported, might be facing demand and supply problems. Tesla has proven itself capable of cranking up production to satisfy demand but not without first encountering several hurdles. Those lessons will hopefully be applied to its first-ever truck. A new electric era is about to begin for Cadillac with the Lyriq, Cadillac's first-ever dedicated EV. Revealed last year as a concept, the Lyriq takes the form of a luxurious midsize SUV. With over 300 miles of range, advanced technology like Super Cruise, and a surprisingly affordable asking price, the Lyriq is already proving popular. Reservations for the production Lyriq opened in September and sold out in just 19 minutes. The Lyriq is the first of several new EVs GM has in the pipeline as Cadillac prepares to become an all-electric brand by 2035. After the Lyriq launches in 2022, Cadillac's electric onslaught will continue with the Celestiq sedan. Cadillac Cadillac This will be Cadillac's answer to the Mercedes EQS. Cadillac's flagship sedan was first teased earlier this year at the Virtual CES show with an opulent glass roof but no debut date was announced. However, according to sources, via GM Authority, the Celestiq will debut in early 2022. We don't have a more specific date than that, but there's a good chance the Celestiq's world debut will coincide with the CES Show in January 2022, one year after the electric sedan was announced. Next year's CES show will take place between January 5-8. Alternatively, Cadillac could reveal the Celestiq at a separate event early in the year. Cadillac Cadillac Originally, Cadillac planned to reveal the Celestiq this summer, but the reveal has been pushed back multiple times due to the pandemic. Like the Lyriq, the Celestiq will be underpinned by GM's flexible modular Ultium platform. Teasers have shown the luxurious cabin will adopt a 2+2 seating layout and Cadillac has confirmed there will be a large display spanning the entire width of the dashboard akin to Mercedes EQS's Hyperscreen. In the teaser, Cadillac highlighted the Celestiq's innovative glass roof that allows occupants to individually configure the transparency. Expect the styling to be inspired by the stunning Cadillac Escala concept. As Cadillac's new flagship, the Celestiq will likely cost around $200,000, but we should find out more details early next year. Ford Blatantly Copies Tesla Supercharger Stations CarBuzz News Features New Cars Used Cars Sell My Car Shopping Tools Car Reviews Car Finder Compare Cars Best Cars Car Dealerships Used Car Reviews Car Advice Home News Ford Blatantly Copies Tesla Supercharger Stations
Ford Blatantly Copies Tesla Supercharger Stations
Nov. 24, 2021 12:01 PM ET by Michael Butler Electric Vehicles / 12 Comments But can't match Tesla's charging performance. US automakers are waking up to the idea that the future is electric, and are making great headway in electrifying their product offerings. Ford, which already offers the Mustang Mach-E, is getting ready for more EV models such as the Ford F-150 Lightning, and with that comes the responsibility of providing, and maintaining a charging network. EV leader Tesla has managed to deliver a successful charging network with its Supercharger stations boasting an iconic hollowed-out design, and now it seems like Ford is following suit with a very similar design, but completely different approach. https://twitter.com/MarcoRPTesla/status/1463152942517833738 The Supercharger Updates Guy/Twitter Tesla Tesla Tesla Whereas Tesla has been focusing on building a brand-specific range of fast-charging systems, Ford is forging partnerships with other charging networks such as Electrify America and Ionity, which is the same path many other manufacturers have taken. Tesla has recently opened up its charging network to other brands, and despite quadrupled charging prices, the Tesla charging network is expanding at an ever-increasing pace. So the approaches might be different, but Ford's blatant ripoff of the Tesla Supercharger design has been causing a bit of commotion on the internet. Ford Ford Ford Ford The new charging stations appearing at Ford dealerships have been labeled as a "disingenuous, unnecessarily large, poorly executed knock-off of our design" by Tesla Product Design Director Javier Verdura. We tend to agree with Verdura. What's worse is that Ford only offers a level 2 charger, while Tesla offers level 3 DC fast chargers. Ford's success will depend on its ability to work with its partners to offer a truly integrated charging network that focuses on more than just quick profits in major metropolitan areas. Tesla has proven that it can provide charging coverage to more remote locations in America, and that builds trust and recognition; something a slick charging station design can't accomplish. While the Nissan Z car has been redesigned to replace the 370Z, we're still waiting for the next-generation Nissan GT-R to arrive. The R35-generation GT-R launched for the 2009 model year and has been largely unchanged apart from an exterior and interior refresh for the 2017 model year. While it refuses to die in most countries, the Nissan GT-R is being retired in Australia after the 2022 model year. To mark the end of its lifecycle, the final batch of around 50 GT-Rs have been imported to Australia including special-edition T-Spec and Nismo SV variants.
As well as marking the end of the current-generation GT-R down under, one of the T-Spec cars is also the last Nissan vehicle in Australia to ever be fitted with a compliance plate or label. Nissan Nissan Nissan Nissan Since 1989, car manufacturers have been fitting compliance plates or labels in Australia, but these will be replaced with online versions from December 2021. "It's often said that it's best to save your best until last, and that's certainly the case here," said Nissan Australia Managing Director Adam Paterson. "The GT-R is Nissan's most celebrated vehicle, and while this isn't goodbye forever, the T-Spec and Nismo SV models do act as the closing of this chapter of the GT-R story in Australia. The fact that the last version of this generation of Nissan's performance icon will also be the last to wear a label that's been part of the fabric of Australian automotive history for more than 30 years is entirely fitting." Nissan Nissan Nissan Nissan If you were hoping the GT-R's discontinuation means the next-generation model must be around the corner, don't get your hopes up - the GT-R is being killed off in Australia because it doesn't meet new side-impact crash test regulations that came into force this month. The T-Spec comes with many enticing features to set it apart from the Premium and Premium Luxury trims in Australia. It gets Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes, forged gold alloy wheels, a carbon-fiber rear spoiler, and an interior finished in dark green. Power comes from a ferocious 3.8-liter V8 with twin-turbocharging and which produces a mighty 565 horsepower. With some modifications, Ford Racing's former director Brian Wolfe has shown how you can extract a lot more power out of Ford's Godzilla engine with little effort. REVan Evan/YouTube REVan Evan/YouTube Wolfe has been busy transplanting Ford's 7.3-liter V8 into a Fox-Body Mustang and in this latest video posted by YouTube channel REVan Evan he shows how a ProCharger supercharger with a huge pulley can boost the output significantly. When hooked up to the dyno, the engine produced 965 hp and 845 lb-ft of torque. Impressively, this output was achieved at just 5,900 rpm, so the engine wasn't even being pushed hard. This exceeded all expectations since the customer only wanted around 850 hp. However, this setup can produce a lot more power than that. REVan Evan/YouTube REVan Evan/YouTube Fuel injectors from a Mustang Shelby GT500 were used at 73 psi but the team ran out of injector capacity because they weren't expecting the engine to make this much power, especially with less than nine pounds of boost pressure. With larger injectors, Wolfe estimates the engine will make around 975-1,000 hp. For this customer build, Ford's Godzilla engine is also upgraded with Stage 2 heads, upgraded pistons, a dry sump, and a mild cam. Since the customer only wanted around 850 hp, the intakes, throttle body, and crank were left stock. With a new intake and a small pulley, Wolfe thinks the engine could produce as much as 1,200-1,300 hp, so it's only a matter of time before tuners unleash Godzilla's full potential. We have some bad news. With the first deliveries of the Rivian R1T now underway and production ramping up, Rivian can start focusing on the R1S SUV. By the end of the year, Rivian is on track to build 1,200 new vehicles and deliver 1,000 units. In the meantime, those who have ordered the R1S are still waiting for their order to arrive. Production of the R1S was expected to start at Rivian's Illinois plant next month. Deliveries were then supposed to start in January 2022. Unfortunately, reservation holders are going to have to wait a little longer to get behind the wheel of the R1S. Rivian Rivian A member of the Rivian Owners Forum has shared an email from Rivian informing R1S Launch Edition reservation holders that the delivery estimate has been pushed back until May 2022 at the earliest. Another member of the forum who placed a deposit for the R1S forum in March 2020 has been told their R1S won't arrive until June-July 2022, while others have an updated delivery window of July-September 2022. It's worth noting that the delivery update only applies to R1S Launch Edition preorders. Deliveries for the entry-level Explore trim were originally slated to start in January 2022 but we won't be surprised if it gets delayed until 2022 or early 2023. Rivian Rivian Rivian Understandably, some reservation holders are not happy about the situation. One forum member even said they immediately canceled their order after receiving the delivery update. It's also not clear if the R1S will still enter production in December, but the delivery update suggests it won't start until 2022. Starting at $77,500, the R1S Launch Edition has been sold out since last year and comes equipped with heated and ventilated seats, natural-grained ash wood interior trim, perforated vegan leather upholstery, special badges, and upgraded 20-inch all-terrain or 22-inch sport wheels. Thanks to its 135-kWh battery pack, the R1S Launch Edition offers 316 miles of range on a single charge. A couple of months back, Subaru revealed the all-new 2022 WRX, and although the design of the car has not gone down well with everyone, the new sedan looks like it'll be a hit. It gets a new 2.4-liter boxer four that is turbocharged to produce 271 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, which can be harnessed with your choice of either a six-speed manual or the Subaru Performance Transmission, an automatic unit. It's not excessively powerful, but an STI version is sure to follow soon enough with more grunt. In preparation for that car, Subaru in Japan has just revealed the WRX S4, a slightly more exciting variant of the existing car. Subaru Subaru Subaru Subaru The powertrain carries over from the regular Subaru WRX unchanged. Instead, the changes you get are more focused on the aesthetics of the car. A hexagonal grille angled forward gives the impression of speed even when stationary while the side view shows off the bulging fenders particularly well when the car is finished in this bold Solar Orange Pearl hue. The color is unique to this model, but you can also choose from Sapphire Blue Pearl, Ignition Red, or Ceramic White additions to the range if you want something a little less extreme. At the rear, the quad exhaust features once more along with gloss black trunk trim and an integrated spoiler. Subaru Subaru Subaru Subaru Fortunately, there are some changes to the way the car drives thanks to the STI Sport R and STI Sport R EX trims that offer variable drive modes that change the parameters of the engine control unit, AWD system, electronic dampers, power steering, and more. Inside the car, you get the same sort of features as the regular car, including an 11.6-inch infotainment display, a 12.3-inch driver cluster, and, on the aforementioned STI-based trims, Recaro front seats finished in Ultra Suede. Subaru is planning 500 units for the first month at a base price that equates to around $31,500. The top trim will set you back up to $41,400. Hopefully, the full-fat STI model won't be much dearer when it finally arrives. Tesla Offers Free Supercharging Over Thanksgiving CarBuzz News Features New Cars Used Cars Sell My Car Shopping Tools Car Reviews Car Finder Compare Cars Best Cars Car Dealerships Used Car Reviews Car Advice Home News Tesla Offers Free Supercharging Over Thanksgiving
Tesla Offers Free Supercharging Over Thanksgiving
Nov. 25, 2021 8:27 AM ET by Martin Bigg Electric Vehicles / Comments But not to everyone. With the Thanksgiving holiday starting this week, American roads are going to be busier than ever with people traveling to visit their families. If you own an electric car, this potentially means longer waiting times at charging stations during the busy holiday period. To help ease the frustration and avoid the rush, Tesla is offering free supercharging for Model 3, Model S, Model X, and Model Y owners during the hectic holiday period.
During off-peak hours before 10 am and after 7 pm, Tesla owners can charge their vehicle for free on specific California routes. The offer is only available from November 24 - November 28 at around 40 chargers on popular California routes including Nevada. Tesla Tesla Since there are more Teslas in California than anywhere else in the world, Supercharger stations in California can get especially busy during Thanksgiving. Last year, Tesla installed a mobile charging station at a Supercharger location halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco to try and reduce traffic at charging stations, but frustrated owners still complained about experiencing long wait times at California charging stations. Tesla has also offered discounted Supercharging rates in the past, but hopefully offering free charging in California will encourage Tesla owners to travel during off-peak hours and reduce wait times and traffic. Tesla Tesla Since the first station was installed back in 2012, Tesla now has more than 25,000 Superchargers at over 2,700 charging stations around the world but wait times and congestion could increase in the future when Tesla allows other car manufacturers to use its Supercharger network. Earlier this month, Tesla started a pilot program at ten locations in the Netherlands that allows non-Tesla vehicles like the Volkswagen ID.4 and Porsche Taycan to use the Supercharger network instead of Electrify America stations. Non-Tesla drivers will be charged extra to use the network and will need to have the Tesla app installed. If there's one European sports car we wish would come to America, it's the Alpine A110. Launched in 2017, the reborn Alpine A110 looks stunning and is significantly lighter and more agile than a Porsche 718 Cayman or Audi TT. Now, this delicious piece of forbidden fruit has just got sweeter. For the 2022 model year, the Alpine A110 has been updated with improved performance, sharper handling, and new tech to make us more envious. Three versions of the A110 are available for 2022: the A110, A110 GT, and A110 S. The entry-level model A110 is powered by the same turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 249 horsepower, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Alpine Alpine Alpine Alpine The GT and S variants, on the other hand, are uprated to 295 hp at 6,300 rpm with 250 lb-ft of torque. With more power, the A110 GT and S will sprint from 0-62 mph in 4.2 seconds, before reaching a top speed of 171 mph with the limiter removed. As standard, the entry-level A110 rides on 17-inch rims wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4 205/45 R17 tires at the front and 235/45 R17 tires at the rear and is fitted with 11.6-inch diameter Brembo front and rear brakes with Charcoal Black calipers. Inside, all 2022 A110 models are equipped with a new seven-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, voice recognition, and navigation. Designed for longer journeys, the more comfortable GT comes with leather seats, 18-inch diamond-cut black rims, and a sport exhaust system. Alpine Alpine Alpine Alpine At the top of the range, the track-focused A110 S features recalibrated anti-roll bars and springs, 50% stiffer coil springs, adjusted shock absorbers, and a 4-millimeter lower ride height, as well as high-performance Brembo brakes and 18-inch GT Race rims wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 semi-slicks. For those who want to unleash the car's full potential on the track, an optional aero kit adds a carbon rear wing and a carbon front spoiler. "2021 is [a] historic year for Alpine: it ventured into Formula 1, won the Grand Prix in Hungary, and pushed ahead with the Endurance program in the top category," said Laurent Rossi, CEO of Alpine. "This is exactly what the new A110 range is all about: it's crisper, pushes performance up a notch, and captures what we are aiming for in the motorsports arena. In Europe, pricing for the 2022 Alpine A110, A110 GT, and A110 S start at €59,500 ($66,718), €69 500 ($77,922), and €71 500 ($80,165) respectively. Subaru&#39 s Stylish Levorg Wagon Now Has WRX Power CarBuzz News Features New Cars Used Cars Sell My Car Shopping Tools Car Reviews Car Finder Compare Cars Best Cars Car Dealerships Used Car Reviews Car Advice Home News Subaru&#39 s Stylish Levorg Wagon Now Has WRX Power
Subaru&#39 s Stylish Levorg Wagon Now Has WRX Power
Nov. 25, 2021 11:01 AM ET by Karl Furlong Industry News / 9 Comments But it remains forbidden fruit in the US. For the few buyers still looking for a sporty wagon, there are pitifully few options on offer in the US. Yes, the Audi RS6 Avant and Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo are fantastic, but not many can afford them. Volvo's wagons are excellent, but both the V60 and V90 will be discontinued for 2022. It makes wagons like the Subaru Levorg even more enticing, but the Levorg is forbidden fruit in the US and that's unlikely to change anytime soon. To add salt to the wound, Subaru has just announced an improved Levorg that notably gains a more powerful 2.4-liter turbocharged engine. Subaru Subaru Subaru Subaru When the new Levorg was announced last year, its powerplant was a 1.8-liter four-cylinder boxer with turbocharging that produced 177 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Now, the Japanese market can opt for the new Levorg STI Sport R with the bigger 2.4-liter engine. This is the same engine that's used in the new WRX Sedan, and that would give the latest Levorg outputs of 271 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The sole transmission is a continuously variable automatic, so no manual is on the menu, unfortunately. As usual, Subaru's all-wheel-drive system is standard. Subaru Subaru Subaru Subaru Subaru has made a couple of other changes to the Levorg lineup like adding an optional sunroof, making changes to the iSight driver-assistance suite, and introducing new colors like Ceramic White, Sapphire Blue Pearl, and Ignition Red. Both a regular STI Sport R and a better-equipped STI Sport R EX are on offer. Like the STI Sport, they come with STI badging and a hood intake. In Japan, the Levorg STI Sport R starts at 3,990,000 yen which is equivalent to around $34,500. The STI Sport R EX, meanwhile, begins at 4,340,000 yen which works out to around $37,600. These prices do, however, exclude a consumption tax in Japan. Still, the more powerful Levorg wagon seems like a brilliant mix of performance, style, practicality, and value - it's a pity we can't experience it for ourselves. Audi Is Bringing Virtual Reality To The Driver&#39 s Seat CarBuzz News Features New Cars Used Cars Sell My Car Shopping Tools Car Reviews Car Finder Compare Cars Best Cars Car Dealerships Used Car Reviews Car Advice Home News Audi Is Bringing Virtual Reality To The Driver&#39 s Seat
Audi Is Bringing Virtual Reality To The Driver&#39 s Seat
Nov. 25, 2021 12:22 PM ET by Sebastian Cenizo Scoop / 6 Comments We foresee absolutely no problems with this idea. Audi is making continual advances in technology. As one of Germany's preeminent automakers, it has a reputation for excellence in every endeavor that must be continually built upon. To that end, Audi is coming up with loads of new ideas, including one that transforms the windshield into a cinematic screen. At the same time, its e-tron GT is proving that EVs can be fun while its electric SUV is becoming even better adapted for daily driving. But despite how busy the automaker is, it is still finding ways to revolutionize driving. One such way has just been uncovered by CarBuzz and points to putting virtual reality in the driving seat, literally. CarBuzz USPTO USPTO According to documents filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the automaker is looking at integrated virtual reality systems that could "be used in the future [...] for presenting different products, in particular in the sales process." So before we all jump on our high horses, Audi is not looking to make virtual reality a part of the driving experience. Instead, the Ingolstadt-based automaker wants to provide a realistic idea of what a new car could be specced like. In this way, you can get a clear idea of what red leather would look like inside a black car. You could see what adding carbon fiber trim would look like instead of aluminum, and you could get an idea of how it would feel to operate the car in the real world. Skoda CarBuzz CarBuzz Audi mentions that this would be especially beneficial in cases where a salesperson is required to present a new vehicle to the potential buyer at their home or their place of work. By implementing a mobile virtual reality system, the customer can get a feel for the car while sitting in it and could have all the options that the car is offered with right at their fingertips without ever visiting a dealer. Of course, virtual reality will never provide the same feel that you get from touching leather, fabrics, or other trim options in real life, but is a way to create a "particularly immersive and authentic sales experience." Overall, we think this is a good idea and have no doubt that it will become reality before long.
