With General Motors shifting focus to crossovers and SUVs, the Chevrolet Malibu is living on borrowed time in the US. Reports suggest the Malibu will be discontinued in the US market after the current generation ends in 2024. In China, however, the Malibu is still proving popular as there is still a high demand for sedans unlike in the US. To celebrate its 110th anniversary, Chevrolet is showcasing an assortment of modified cars at the 2021 Guangzhou Motor Show in China. One of the standouts is the extensively modified Chevrolet Malibu Code X, which incorporates elements of the Camaro to create a bizarre Frankenstein Malibu monster. The result is...interesting. Chevrolet Chevrolet Chevrolet With its lowered suspension, flared fenders, and ventilated brake discs, this wild motorsport-inspired creation is barely recognizable as a Malibu. The most noticeable difference can be found at the front, where the Malibu has the front fascia of a Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE incorporating the muscle car's headlights, grille, and bumper. The latter is enhanced with a prominent carbon splitter. The Camaro's taillights have also been fitted to the back along with a prominent motorsport-style carbon-fiber rear wing, an aggressive diffuser, and a quad exhaust system. Other modifications include a hood scoop, carbon side skirt extensions, and aftermarket wheels. Chevrolet Chevrolet Chevrolet The rear door has also been removed to make the Malibu look like a coupe, but the long-wheelbase won't fool anyone into thinking it's a Camaro. Inside, the Malibu Code X is fitted with Alcantara sports seats. The cabin is trimmed in Alcantara throughout with yellow contrast stitching and accents, while the Malibu's steering wheel has been replaced with a flat-bottom steering wheel from the Chevy Camaro. It isn't clear what lies under the hood. In China, the Malibu XL is offered with a turbocharged 1.3-liter, a naturally-aspirated 1.5-liter, and a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. Paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission, the more powerful 2.0-liter turbo produces 237 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, but you would hope the Malibu Code X has a more extreme engine under the hood to complement the radical styling. The gargantuan Lexus LX 600 was revealed last month as the Japanese marque's new flagship SUV. It comes with all the power, space, and capability that has been synonymous with the LX moniker, and it takes the fight straight to America's most badass SUV, the new Cadillac Escalade. As is often the case with a new release, the automaker doesn't immediately reveal pricing information, and that's been the case with the new LX as well. Thankfully, a new post on the Japanese site Creative 311 has leaked JDM pricing for the LX 600 that gives us a clue as to how much the SUV could cost in North America. Creative 311 Lexus Lexus The post lists prices for three trim levels: Base, Off-Road, and Executive. The entry-level model, if you can call it that, begins at 12,500,000 yen or the equivalent of around $108,394. This price includes 10% tax in the region too. For perspective, the current, older Lexus LX begins at $86,930. Moving up the trim levels, the Off-Road model costs the equivalent of $111,870 and the Executive comes in at around $156,100. That's a huge jump from the mid-range Off-Road derivative. It's doubtful that the Executive, with two rows and ultra-luxurious seating for only four occupants, will be offered here. Excluding the LFA, the LX 600 Executive will be the priciest Lexus ever sold in Japan. Creative 311 Creative 311 Elsewhere in the post on Creative 311, snapshots of a Lexus brochure were posted that reveal some details about the LX 600. As this is a Japanese brochure, not all of the information in it will necessarily apply to US-spec models. Some of the exterior colors that will be offered include Sonic Quartz, Black, Manganese Raster, and Telan Khaki Mica Metallic. Wheel sizes go from 18 to 22 inches in size. Inside, customers will be able to specify colors like Black, Crimson, Hazel and White/Dark Sepia. On the Executive, semi-aniline upholstery is offered in Black or Sunflare Brown. Lexus Lexus While Japan does without an F Sport version, we will see a trim like this in the US. It'll have an F mesh design spindle grille, bespoke seats, and more to set it apart from other models. As in Japan, a high-end Mark Levinson sound system will be optional. In Japan, this will add around $2,375 to the bill. A rear-seat entertainment system, meanwhile, will cost in the region of $2,489. When it was revealed, the Lexus LX was expected to arrive at US dealers in the first quarter of 2022. This latest post specifies a similar delivery date of March 2022 in Japan. Although it isn't cheap by any means, the new LX 600 looks set to retain its reputation for robust luxury. The owner thought it was hilarious. For some unknown reason, extremely wealthy people are drawn to both supercars and exotic animals. As you shall see shortly, the two don't mix at all. Humaid Abdulla Albuqaish is an Arab Sheikh located in Dubai. He is passionate about fast cars and wild animals and collects both. Scrolling through his Instagram feed is a bit like watching a classier version of Tiger King, only with less mullets and meth. Regular readers will know that wild animals and cars don't mix. And bears are known for damaging cars. In September this year, a bear tried to boost a Lexus, and the year before that, one tried to steal a Mercedes. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Humaid Abdulla Albuqaish (@humaidalbuqaish) Humaid Abdulla Albuqaish is not worried about that. He owns tigers, hyenas, snakes, and a baby bear. All the animals are housed in a climate-controlled zoo next to his mansion, but they are regularly let out to play. The Sheikh also owns a small bear, who recently had a negative encounter with the door of a Lamborghini Huracan Performante'. In a video posted on the Sheikh's Instagram feed, you can see the excited bear approach the Lambo, seemingly shortly after he arrived home. Now, even the smallest black bear is still 150 lbs of murderfluff, with zero respect for carefully designed door hinges. Once the bear put his full weight on it, the door simply came off. And the Sheikh had a nice laugh. @humaidalbuqaish/Instagram @humaidalbuqaish/Instagram @humaidalbuqaish/Instagram @humaidalbuqaish/Instagram To drive the point home, the Sheikh posted another video of him holding the door, having another laugh. Our furry friend can be seen in the background having an apple. In any other place, this would have made the evening news, but in Dubai, it's just another day. Dubai is well-known for its excess and the Sheikh will likely just buy another Lamborghini to replace the damaged one. Most likely an STO. Cars are considered disposable items in Dubai, but what do you expect from a city known for providing its police department with the craziest supercars? Honda has been making significant strides in vehicle safety recently. Its autonomous safety tech is already among the best in the world, and it keeps on coming up with brilliant solutions to common problems. Now, Honda has announced its most ambitious safety project yet, which is zero traffic collision fatalities by 2050. The advanced future technologies that will help achieve this goal were introduced recently. Honda says it's designing this tech for a "society where everyone sharing the road will be liberated from the risk of traffic collisions and enjoy the freedom of mobility with total peace of mind." Two critical pieces of technology will help Honda get there. The first is artificial intelligence-powered Intelligent Driver-Assistive Technology. The second part is the Safe and Sound Network Technology, which connects all road users, people at the side of the road, infrastructure, and mobility products. Honda Honda Honda To come up with the first system, Honda studied the human brain, with emphasis on risk-taking behavior. Using a series of ADAS sensors and cameras, the car will constantly watch the driver and their surroundings. The AI will not only assist in real-time, but it will also adapt to its particular owner. As we understand it, the technology should be able to predict common mistakes and will provide warnings. Honda says the system will adapt to individuals to reduce any sense of anxiety.
With this particular system, Honda hopes to remove all operation errors, remove all prediction errors made by driver-assistance systems, and accidents caused by daydreaming and careless driving. We wonder how this system will be adapted to various drivers, however. There's a big difference between the person who drives an Accord and one who drives a Civic Type R. Where does the AI draw a line between fun and carelessness? Honda Honda Honda The Safe and Sound Network technology is not unheard of. Earlier this year, Nissan also revealed plans to connect its cars to everything to create an environment known as Safe Swarm. In short, with all things connected, everything and everyone knows what's going on in the immediate surroundings. Information about potential risks can be communicated between people and objects, like roadside cameras, car safety systems, and smartphones. Honda says the technology will be able to reproduce the traffic situation in a virtual space, after which it will send out a warning to drivers and pedestrians as well. Imagine a message popping up on your smartphone warning you to get your nose out of Facebook because you're about to have a negative encounter with a car. Honda Honda It sounds like a science fiction movie, but Honda will be driving industrywide and public-private collaboration to get the system up and running during the second half of the 2020s. Honda is going for real-world implementation after 2030. Before then, it says it will build the systems and complete verification of effectiveness in the first half of the 2020s. Then, as mentioned, it will push for collaboration on a large scale. "Striving to completely eliminate mobility risks for everyone sharing the road, Honda will offer safety and peace of mind to each and every road user as a new value. Applying our future safety technologies which will embody such new value, Honda will work toward the realization of 'zero traffic collision fatalities' involving Honda motorcycles and automobiles globally by 2050," said Keiji Ohtsu, President and Representative Director of Honda R&D. Bugatti is looking forward to an exciting new path as its future becomes entwined with that of EV-maker Rimac. But as exciting as the possibilities for what's coming are, we sometimes forget just how special everything that Bugatti has already achieved is. One of its greatest accomplishments was becoming the first automaker to reach 300 mph in a production car, and the way that the Chiron Super Sport 300+ got there is down to more than just an increase in power. Join us as we explore the French automaker's astonishing engineering solutions that helped it reach 304 mph in August 2019. Bugatti Bugatti Bugatti We've glossed over the enhancements that this hypercar received over a regular Chiron before and have considered the differences between it and the Pur Sport variant too, but now we can see just how much changed on the so-called "regular" Super Sport that followed the 300+. We start with the aerodynamics of the car, which were enhanced partly through new air curtains that help smooth the airflow over the wheels. In addition to traditional air curtains, secondary curtains from the headlights and additional air outlets on the front arches further define the look of the Super Sport, which has been "shaped by speed." Bugatti Bugatti Bugatti Bugatti Naturally, you want the air to move over the car as quickly and cleanly as possible, but you also need some to be sucked into the car for cooling. Bugatti engineers worked hard to ensure that the optimal amount of air would pass over the radiators at full load. To achieve this, the SS has its main radiator mounted roughly 8% higher. At high speeds, those air curtains see most of the air flow past them while top speed mode also positions the front diffusers more horizontally with less air going to the wheel arches, thereby improving downforce. Bugatti Bugatti Bugatti Evidence of the hard work done at the front is also found in nine cylindrical air outlets in the front arches. Inspired by the style of the Bugatti EB 110 SS and shaped by Computed Fluid Dynamics (CFD), these help increase downforce without adding to resistance, and at 236 mph (380 kph), generate between 44 and 66 pounds of additional downward pressure. At the same time, the new wings improve brake cooling by drawing air out of the wheel arches without sucking up stones. The handmade wings weigh around 8.8 pounds, are fashioned from carbon, and have been developed to improve pedestrian safety while also preventing lift of the front end. Bugatti Bugatti Bugatti Bugatti One of the more obvious changes when you see the car side-by-side with the normal Chiron is the longtail, which extends the body by 9.8 inches. This, in conjunction with an enlarged diffuser profile, helps create a breakaway area at high speeds that is as small as possible, significantly reducing wind resistance. Meanwhile, an 8% larger rear wing makes the airbrake more efficient but can retract almost completely for when you're chasing triple-digit speeds. "In top-speed mode, the Chiron Super Sport generates only minimal resistance, making it perfectly balanced and as aerodynamically efficient as possible," says deputy design director Frank Heyl. "The Super Sport generates just enough downforce to stay stable above 400 kph. That's essential at this speed to avoid putting excessive pressure on the tires." Bugatti Bugatti Bugatti Despite all the aero work on the car, including that new area of low pressure created by the longtail and the larger diffuser, the exhaust gets no backflow. It's well regulated in terms of temperature too. With a double-wall structure insulating the titanium bezel, the air around the exhaust cools the exhaust - something you definitely want to consider when the exhaust gasses can reach temperatures of up to 1,562 degrees Fahrenheit. The air is also channeled in such a way that the surrounding carbon components are not overheated. Even the turbos themselves are more efficient despite larger compressor wheels. At full load, 4.8 tons of air flow through the four turbochargers, but throttle response is similar to that of the original car with its smaller turbines. Bugatti Bugatti Bugatti As we already know, the 8.0-liter quad-turbo W16 engine produces 1,578 horsepower, up by 98 horses, and all 1,180 lb-ft of torque is available from 2,250 rpm to 7,000 rpm, up from a peak of 6,000 rpm in the regular car. Furthermore, the rev limit has been raised by 300 rpm to 7,050 rpm. With more rev range and increased performance, the engine undergoes more stress, so the chain tensioner, cylinder heads, valve springs, vibrational dampers, air-con compressor, water pump, and more were all redesigned to cope. Seventh gear is now also 3.6% longer, making the car 12% or four seconds quicker to 400 kph with a time of 28.6 seconds. Bugatti The chassis was redesigned as well to take into account the change in axle load that came with the new longtail design, while new Michelin tires (Pilot Sport Cup 2) were optimized for high speed and are wrapped around new lightweight wheels. These magnesium rims weigh around 35 pounds less than regular Chiron wheels, thereby reducing unsprung weight. We often call the Chiron (and its numerous variants that include the Super Sport) a technical masterpiece. It's an engineering wonder, but it's hard to fathom just how wondrous it is. With these details being released by Bugatti, we have a newfound appreciation for the exceptional work done in Molsheim. We would take our hats off to you, Bugatti, but the Chiron Super Sport has blown them away. BMW is one of the world's biggest and best automakers, but one doesn't get there (or, indeed, stay there) without constantly looking for ways to evolve and get better. Sure, not everyone will be a big fan of everything that an automaker does - BMW XM, we're looking at you and we really wish we hadn't - but that doesn't mean that a car company should just rest on its laurels and only give us that which is already proven to work. Recently, we've uncovered innovative new inventions like falcon doors for SUVs, but there's even more exciting technology coming to the Bimmers of the future. Thanks to patent documents filed in Germany, CarBuzz can exclusively report that something as banal and conventional as the window is set to be radically redesigned. CarBuzz German Patent and Trade Mark Office German Patent and Trade Mark Office German Patent and Trade Mark Office The patent refers to a frameless window, but not just any frameless window - perfectly flush frameless windows. If you're struggling to conceptualize it, think of how a panoramic sunroof looks when closed, running flush with the roof. Now imagine that concept for side windows that run flush with the door panel. According to the documentation, the existing design of frameless windows allows for too much of a "wide seal" between the glass and the nearest panels, a gap that is clearly visible. BMW wants to change this and close the gap, and the solution that it has come up with suggests moving the window up from its channel and out of the door to the closed position. Once it gets there, the bottom of the window can be detached from the mechanisms that hold it in place and move outwards, creating an even tighter shut line. Naturally, this requires various failsafe systems to work well. BMW BMW The filing indicates a separate glass "outer pane" that would be fixed to the roof. This could act as a sort of built-in wind deflector that would allow the actual window to offer a recessed opening at the top without letting water in when it's raining, for example. As we touched on above, the holding mechanisms (two are mentioned) can ensure that a tilted window is held in place firmly. BMW has not made any claims as to aerodynamic gains here, which allows us to surmise that the invention is based purely on aesthetics and style. The filing also makes regular mention of this system being implemented on a coupe, so this is almost certainly an invention that has the express purpose of making a car look sleeker. Essentially, it has its benefits, but it looks like a lot of overengineering for not much reward. Then again, if BMW and others didn't push their boundaries, they wouldn't be as successful. Tesla Gives The Model S Plaid Ceramic Brakes CarBuzz News Features New Cars Used Cars Sell My Car Shopping Tools Car Reviews Car Finder Compare Cars Best Cars Car Dealerships Used Car Reviews Car Advice Home News Tesla Gives The Model S Plaid Ceramic Brakes
Tesla Gives The Model S Plaid Ceramic Brakes
Nov. 25, 2021 2:23 PM ET by Sebastian Cenizo Electric Vehicles / 11 Comments Now we're talking. The Tesla Model S Plaid has already proven itself to be exceptionally capable, both in a straight line and around twisty turns. Of course, it held a quarter-mile world record for only a few moments as the even more extreme Rimac Nevera absolutely decimates it, but that takes nothing away from just how special this electric sedan is. And at a far lower price point, the Plaid is certainly the car that most of us are more likely to get a chance to drive. But now there's a way to make your new Model S Plaid even more expensive, as well as a lot more capable. Tesla Tesla Tesla has just revealed a carbon-ceramic brake upgrade for the organ-squishingly quick EV that is expected to be available by the middle of next year. "The kit includes all-new carbon-silicon carbide rotors that provide maximum high-temperature durability and heat management, one-piece forged calipers with high-performance pads, and high-temperature brake fluid," reads the package description. The front discs measure 16.14 inches in diameter with a thickness of 1.6 inches. The rear rotors are just as expansive in diameter but a touch thinner at 1.3 inches thick. The front calipers are six-piston units while the rears have four pistons. However, you have to run 21-inch Arachnid wheels to fit these beefy brakes. Tesla Tesla As for cost, the addition of this package will add $20,000 to your build price, which is certainly not affordable for everyone. Although we object to Tesla using its customers as guinea pigs when it comes to semi-autonomous driving technology, our hope is that interest in these more capable stoppers is being gauged so that Tesla can determine if there is still demand for an even quicker Plaid Plus variant. We recently spotted a very sporty Model S testing at the Nurburgring, and although it's possible that this prototype was only testing parts that may be offered on the regular Plaid in the future, perhaps the brakes you see here will be the only upgrade that is not Plaid Plus exclusive. We'll bring you more updates as we get them. We've known for a while now that the Kia Niro is set to be refreshed with an all-new look, and over the past couple of months, we've seen spy shots of the vehicle in various states of undress. Then yesterday, we finally got an official teaser that revealed the front, rear, and cabin of the crossover. These images told us that the crossover would be getting a much more advanced cabin and fresh new styling cues, but now we get to take them all in properly as Kia has just revealed the all-new Niro at the 2021 Seoul Mobility Show in Korea. Kia Kia Kia Kia's focus with the new crossover is sustainability. According to Kia president and CEO Ho Sung Song, "the all-new Kia Niro makes it simple to practice a sustainable lifestyle with its eco-friendly materials, advanced technology, and electric powertrains while it also fulfills the practical needs of customers." To achieve this, the Niro has been completely redesigned from the ground up. The 2019 HabaNiro concept helped shape this car's styling, which boasts a wide pillar at the rear designed to enhance airflow for improved aerodynamics. This leads to a rear fascia boasting boomerang-shaped taillights, while the front shows off a new interpretation of the brand's signature 'tiger face' that now incorporates 'heartbeat' LED running lights. Kia Kia Kia Kia has also added something called 'Greenzone Drive Mode' for better efficiency. This automatically changes the car from plug-in hybrid mode to EV mode. When driving in green zones like residential areas, the Niro uses navigation cues and driving history data to automatically move in a more efficient manner and can recognize a driver's favorite places in which electric driving is usually activated. The aim of sustainability is also evidenced by the fact that recycled materials are used in the cabin, where you'll find a headliner made from recycled wallpaper, seats made from Bio PU with Tencel from eucalyptus leaves, and BTX-free water-based paint for the door panels. This paint has no benzene, toluene, or xylene isomers. Other highlights inside include the dial-type shift lever, offset dash, ambient lighting system, and beautifully styled air vents. The all-new crossover is on display until December 5th, after which we expect to hear of a US launch date. Before the new CT5-V Blackwing arrived, the CTS-V was Cadillac's flagship performance sedan. With a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 LSA from a C6 Corvette ZR1 under the hood in the second-generation model pumping out 556 horsepower and 551 lb-ft of torque, the CTS-V offered unprecedented performance for a Cadillac. Despite its cheaper asking price, the CTS-V could hold its own against established German performance sedans like the mighty BMW M5 and Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG. With power being sent to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission, the CTS-V accelerated to 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds, hit a top speed of 191 mph, and blitz the quarter-mile in 12 seconds at 118 mph. The CTS-V we feature toda, as you have probably guessed, is no stock CTS-V. Drag Racing and Car Stuff/YouTube Drag Racing and Car Stuff/YouTube As the YouTube channel Drag Racing and Car Stuff shows, the Cadillac CTS-V can be extensively modified to post some mind-blowing quarter-mile times on the drag strip during the World Cup Finals. This custom creation is based on a 2009 CTS-V powered by a twin-turbo engine, although no specific technical details are available, unfortunately. Hennessey has already shown it's possible to extract 1,000 horsepower from the CTS-V. In a series of drag races, the CTS-V is pitted against some absurdly powerful turbocharged Honda Civics, one of which is wearing a green livery inspired by the Mitsubishi Eclipse that starred in The Fast and the Furious.
Drag Racing and Car Stuff/YouTube Drag Racing and Car Stuff/YouTube The fastest run is saved until the end, where the CTS-V runs the quarter mile in 8.4 seconds at 162 mph, despite pulling a dramatic, crowd-pleasing wheelie for a couple of seconds at the start. If that wasn't already impressive, the CTS-V performed an even faster run off camera the next day, completing the quarter mile in 8.1 seconds at 164 mph. For comparison, that's around four seconds quicker than the stock CTS-V's time and more than 2.5 seconds faster than a Dodge Challenger SRT Super Stock, which will do the quarter mile in 10.5 seconds. For as long as we can remember, Volvo has been obsessed with automotive safety. This is, after all, the company that helped to popularize retractable three-point seat belts. It's also the company that conducts some of the most extreme crash tests in the industry. Now, Volvo Cars has announced an investment in Spectralics, an optical and imaging technology startup. This move comes via the company's venture capital investment arm known as the Volvo Cars Tech Fund. Volvo's investment will give the Swedish automaker access to groundbreaking technologies that could transform the in-car experience. One of these technologies could enable the largest head-up display seen in the industry so far. Volvo Carbuzz Israeli-based Spectralics has a background in aerospace technology development, so it's perhaps not a great surprise that the company has come up with a multi-layered thin combiner (MLTC) solution with a thin optics 'film' that can see through surfaces of various sizes and shapes. The tech could be used to overlay images across a vehicle's entire windshield. This would dramatically widen the driver's field of view and virtual objects can be superimposed onto the actual environment perceived by the driver. Considering that current head-up displays are around 10 inches in size, this could be a huge step forward. Volvo Volvo Volvo The technology can also be used for blind-proof front-looking cameras, in-cabin sensing, or digital holographic projections. Think of it as an evolution of current augmented-reality head-up display systems. We could see this tech being employed in luxury models like the upcoming electric successor to the XC90, before filtering down to smaller Volvos like the XC40 Recharge. As long as the automaker can figure out a way for the tech to be helpful rather than distracting, it could prove extremely useful in limiting accidents since the driver's field of vision would be expanded. "Spectralics is an exciting company with technology that holds truly great promise," said chief product officer at Volvo Cars, Henrik Green. "By supporting their development, we can bring forward the potential their products could have in future Volvo cars." Electric cars face one major issue that acts as a stumbling block to widespread adoption. It's not the lack of emotion with its dull and uninspiring sounds, since that only applies to a relatively small group of people that we fall into as enthusiasts. No, the biggest issue is range anxiety, and although automakers are continually redeveloping their electric offerings, it will be a long time until there is enough infrastructure to make driving an EV anywhere feasible. Nevertheless, manufacturers like Audi are pushing ahead with electrification programs, but until the range and tech are up to scratch, the German automaker is exploring other options too, and one of them is a very clever range extender. CarBuzz German Patent and Trade Mark Office German Patent and Trade Mark Office CarBuzz According to patent documents uncovered by CarBuzz, Audi is looking to develop a compact, low-vibration, boxer-style range extender engine to further enhance the range of its electric vehicles. The reasons they would want to do such a thing rather than simply soldier on with traditional hybrids are mentioned in the filing, which lists issues such as space, weight, vibration, and noise. Many of these issues could be solved with a Wankel rotary engine, notes the document, but "poor thermal efficiency" and "an unfavorably shaped combustion chamber" put such an idea to bed in the minds of Audi engineers. Thus, a tightly packaged two-cylinder boxer is the way forward. German Patent and Trade Mark Office German Patent and Trade Mark Office Audi Audi The idea of using a tiny, low-vibration combustion engine as a range extender is not something altogether new, as Obrist Powertrain recently revealed its own such creation that was fitted to a Tesla Model 3. Sure, it's not the cleanest possible way of getting where you need to go, but making such a small engine reliable, economical, and powerful for its size could have benefits in the long-term retention of the combustion engine as a whole. The more efficient this small range extender gets, the more Audi will learn about applying similar principles to full-size engines. At the very least, the Audi e-tron GT of tomorrow will be able to go much further than ever before. We talk a lot about electrifying the auto industry here at CarBuzz, hence the name. But boating, more specifically shipping, is one of the main contributors to global warming. GM has a plan to electrify the lake, which sounds more dangerous than it is, by buying 25% of Seattle-based electric boatmaker Pure Watercraft.
We're talking about smaller and personal watercraft here. The company specializes in building electric outboard motors, which can be easier to run and maintain than traditional oily marine engines. Additionally, there are plenty of local swim holes that only allow electric motors, and if, like vehicles, we can get the same output/enjoyment, why not save the planet at the same time? Pure Watercraft Pure Watercraft Pure Watercraft "GM's stake in Pure Watercraft represents another exciting opportunity to extend our zero-emissions goal beyond automotive applications," said Dan Nicholson, GM vice president of global electrification, controls, software and electronics. "Building upon GM's existing efforts to strategically deploy our technology across rail, truck and aerospace industries, the combined expertise of these two enterprises should result in future zero-emissions marine product offerings, providing consumers with more choice than before." In the release, there is a mention of GM investing $35 billion in electric and autonomous technology, but no mention of the Ultium battery from the GMC Hummer EV specifically. But like Nicholson says above, GM can do this in space and on rail, so there's no reason to think it can't develop something for the pond. GMC GMC GMC "Our mission is to enable a new era in boating," said Andy Rebele, founder and CEO of Pure Watercraft. "This joint effort with GM is expected to enable us to make significant technological advancements in range and charging, while achieving volume production." That all sounds great, our only real question is how people are supposed to charge these things? There's no EV network on water. Pure Watercraft's current setup uses modular batteries with a rapid charger left at the dock. It says its boats can charge from half to full in 90 minutes. Going larger will require more power, and more voltage dangling precariously close to the water. We're most excited about the instant torque, on the water. This dedicated race car, based on the already scorching BMW M4 Coupe promises massive performance and is eligible for 2022 IMSA WeatherTech GTD and SRO GT classes. This is a dedicated race car for professional teams, which is not for everyone. That's why BMW is getting ready to launch the BMW M4 GT4 G82, a customer racing car that will replace the successful F82 M4 GT4. The car should be introduced in 2022, just in time for the racing season in the Northern hemisphere, and as always, the BMW M Design team has given us a sneak preview of this track-focused beast. All we get is a rear three-quarter view, but that should be enough to convince most serious BMW fans to buy one. BMW BMW BMW BMW From what we can tell, this new BMW track car has all the right ingredients: the wheel arches have been generously flared, the front end features a number of splitters and canards. The rear-end of the BMW M4 GT4 G82 looks more or less like the standard car, except for the massive rear wing, which should add some serious downforce. Don't expect any major changes, as BMW plans to keep the design of the GT4 as similar to the road-going car as possible. BMW BMW BMW BMW Under the hood, the BMW M4 GT4 G82 shares its 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged S58 six-cylinder engine with the M4. In the BMW M4 Competition, this motor produces 503 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, but we expect power outputs to be slightly lower in the track car due to the strict regulations of different championships. As far as price goes, BMW has not yet said anything, but the previous generation cost around $210,000. That's enough cash to buy four BMW 2 Series Coupes, but it can still be considered cheap when you realize that the BMW M4 GT3 race car costs over half a million. When you hear of a concept that bears the 'Vision' nomenclature, you know that it will probably be something rather radical. The Mini Vision Urbanaut is a good example, providing a new interpretation of what the living space inside a car ought to be like. Then you have BMW's i Vision Circular Concept that aims to preview mobility in the year 2040. Mercedes-Benz has shown off its own such concepts, most recently revealing the Vision AVTR Concept in September of last year. Now the German automaker is following up stunning production vehicles like the Mercedes-Benz EQS with a new concept called the Vision EQXX, and according to a telling LinkedIn post, this will be revealed early next year. Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz The post comes from Markus Schafer, member of the board at Mercedes-Benz. In it, Schafer explains that the Vision EQXX is set to become the most efficient vehicle that Merc has ever made as it aims to "Lead in Electric Drive." Mercedes has teased this vehicle before, but we weren't provided with an actual range estimate. All we were told is that one would be able to drive from Nice to Stuttgart. Thankfully, the above post tells us that we can expect "a real-world range of more than 1,000 km," or 621 miles in our money. To achieve this, various departments of the company will collaborate. Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz Schafer says that Mercedes is calling the concept an "interdisciplinary technology program," with experts in "energy efficiency, vehicle concept development, eDrive system integration, software, and design [...] working hand in hand." The boffins at AMG will also be providing input, and Schafer promises exceptional aerodynamic properties along with increased energy density of up to 20% over the battery pack you get in the EQS. More details will come early next year as the all-new Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX concept will be unveiled as part of a world premiere on January 3, 2022. Tesla's testing of its Full Self-Driving Beta program is still happening but there are still a few kinks to work out. Two things happened earlier this month, specifically the first known accident and a recall of almost 12,000 vehicles due to a "communication error" involving the forward-collision warning. Now, per Electrek, the automaker is asking owners who use FSD Beta if it can use footage taken from the cameras inside and outside of the vehicle in case of a safety risk or accident. Tesla has never used footage with specific individuals, only anonymously. Nor was it ever previously associated with a private car. Why did Tesla want that footage in the first place? So that it could feed it to its machine learning system for Autopilot improvements. For FSD Beta, Tesla wants to use a different learning method. Tesla Tesla Tesla When an owner goes to download the latest version of the system, they'll see the usual list of warnings along with this new tidbit: "By enabling FSD Beta, I consent to Tesla's collection of VIN-associated image data from the vehicle's external cameras and Cabin Camera in the occurrence of a serious safety risk or a safety event like a collision." The key thing there is "VIN-associated." Before this new provision was added, Tesla wasn't legally allowed to use any footage without the driver's permission. It's now baked in to all future FSD Beta updates. Okay, so why is Tesla doing this? What does it have to do with machine learning? Not much. Tesla Facebook The apparent reason is legal liability. Gathering footage and storing it can be used as evidence in case of an accident where FSD Beta is being blamed. Tesla's first driver-assist system, Autopilot, is currently under investigation by the NHTSA. The carmaker maintains the technology is safe but the feds and others continue to have their doubts. Tesla clearly doesn't want FSD Beta to one day undergo the same scrutiny. Securing footage is, perhaps, the best way to prove the system's reliability, instead of blaming the driver of a Model 3 or any other Tesla vehicle. Chances are most owners won't have a problem with this and will continue to regularly press the 'Update' button. Still, it might be troubling for others to know the carmaker is now doing this. EV charging stations are a hot topic in the USA right now, following the White House's announcement that $7.5 billion will be spent on EV charging stations as part of the 1.2 trillion dollar infrastructure bill. Across the pond, they do things a bit differently. The most extensive network of charging stations belongs to Ionity. It's essentially a joint venture between various manufacturers to create a fast-charging network along major highways in Europe. Manufacturers involved include BMW, Ford, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche. Ionity recently announced its expansion plans. By 2025 the number of its charging sites will go up from the current 400 to more than 1,000. The result will be nearly 7,000 charging points scattered throughout Europe. Porsche Porsche Porsche Ionity is also moving away from only providing charging services on significant highways. The next round of charging stations will be built near major cities and along busy main roads in cities. These locations will have between six to 12 charging points. Existing points that have proven to be popular will also be upgraded with additional charging points. Ionity makes use of the Combined Charging System, which is the European charging standard. It can be used by all the EV vehicles produced by the manufacturers mentioned above and more. Think of it as Tesla's expanding network, which will be opened up to other manufacturers in due course. Tesla is currently running a pilot program in the Netherlands, granting permission to Volkswagen ID.3. owners to use its network. The best news regarding Ionity's upgrade is the 800-volt technology. For Porsche, it means a Taycan customer can use the full 270 kW charging potential. It will likely increase Porsche Taycan sales in Europe. In the USA, the Taycan is already the most popular Porsche that isn't an SUV. Porsche Porsche Porsche The Taycan can get from 5% to 80% in around 22 minutes using the available fast-charging. Still not as quick as pumping gas, but getting closer than ever before. As a bonus, Taycan owners get charged a standardized and discounted price, currently 0.33 Euros per kilowatt-hour. That's roughly 37 cents per kilowatt-hour. "We are seeing a clear increase in electromobility and the associated high-performance charging infrastructure. At Porsche, 50% of the cars delivered worldwide by 2025 are expected to be partially or fully electric - more than 80% by the end of the decade. By investing in the Ionity joint venture, we are sending an important signal to customers that elevates the comfort and convenience of traveling in an electric vehicle even further," says Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board at Porsche. What does your dream car garage look like? Chances are it looks like this incredible collection of supercars and luxury cars worth $40 million that includes everything from a Bugatti Divo to a Ferrari SF90 Stradale and a Mercedes McLaren SLR. This jaw-dropping collection can be found at Hollmann International, a luxury car dealership located in Bremen, Germany. In a new video posted by Novitec Group, Supercar Diaries host Bijon de Kock gives us a tour inside Hollmann, and it looks like supercar heaven. Naturally, many of the cars for sale at Hollmann have been modified by Novitec. Parked outside the dealership is a limited-edition Ferrari F8 Tributo N-Largo tuned by Novitec to produce 818 horsepower, turning it into a true McLaren 765LT fighter.
Novitec Group/YouTube Novitec Group/YouTube Stepping inside the main showroom, you are greeted by a plethora of Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Porsches, Maseratis, Bentleys, and Maybachs. Collectively, the Maybachs are worth a quarter of a million euros alone. There are also not one but two Ferrari SF90 Stradale hybrid supercars on display, with one finished in red and another painted grey with the Assetto Fiorano package. Ferrari charges $55,000 for the package, which adds a subtle ducktail spoiler and clever weight-reducing upgrades. De Kock confirms that Novitec is working on a more affordable package that adds a similar spoiler. Sadly, the Bugatti Divo is hidden under a cover, but that's okay because there are plenty of other masterpieces to marvel at. Novitec Group/YouTube Novitec Group/YouTube Novitec Group/YouTube Going through every car for sale would take all day, but one of the rarest, most unusual cars that caught de Kock's attention is a striking Porsche 935 race car. Only 77 were made and seven of them were finished in naked carbon fiber - including the one shown in this video. It appears to be the same carbon-bodied Porsche 935 Hollmann listed for sale last year for €1.45 million (around $1.73 million). Bijon de Kock is awestruck by its presence, describing it as a cross between a race car, a stealth bomber, and the Batmobile. He then turns his attention to the Maserati MC20, confirming that Maserati's new V6-powered supercar will get the Novitec tuning treatment for those who crave more power. Hollman even offers its own bespoke interiors for the Maybach GLS; an example shown in the video is customized with white leather bucket seats. We shudder to think what the monthly insurance premium is like. Tesla is breaking records all over the world with the Model S Plaid. Jay Leno set a blistering quarter-mile record of 9.24 seconds, and then it went on to decimate the Porsche Taycan Turbo's time at the Nurburgring. It also holds the production car record at Laguna Seca Raceway. Great to see that it's not just fast in a straight line, then. Shortly after Jay Leno set the record, it changed ownership again. Nichole Elff took it from him at the World Wide Technology Raceway with a 9.08 second run at 154 mph. You can see the video of that achievement below, and we have to say it's pretty eerie to see a car blast over the finish line in near silence. Recently, there was another change of ownership, though neither Tesla nor the driver was particularly vocal about it. The driver, Christine Dodworth, made some minor modifications to the Model S in question. The passenger seats was removed to save weight, and the car was fitted with stickier road-legal rubber. The result was a quarter-mile time of 8.994 seconds, which makes Tesla the first manufacturer to produce a car that can get into the 8s. At the half-track marker, the car set a time of 5.816 at 125 mph. It crossed the line at 155.10 mph. @lasergeorge/Instagram @lasergeorge/Instagram View this post on Instagram A post shared by George Dodworth (@lasergeorge) The Model S Plaid is a colossal engineering achievement. It provides hypercar performance, seating for five, and a large trunk-all for just $129,990. If you don't want an EV, you'd have to spend $368,000 on a McLaren 675LT to get closest to the Tesla's time. To be fair, there is one car that's officially faster. The Rimac Revera recently set an official quarter-mile time of 8.582 seconds. While Rimac's time is undoubtedly epic, it makes Tesla's achievement even more impressive. The Revera has four electric motors producing 1,914 hp and 1,740 lb-ft of torque. Oh, and it costs about $2.5 million. The trickle-down effect of neo-liberal capitalism has proven to be yet another lie told by the wealthy to keep the hoi polloi complacent and hopeful, but they are starting to get fed up. This frustration can be experienced first hand in a hilarious YouTube video posted by user Banter & Whatsapp. The video shows what happens when the rich experience misfortune, and the ordinary man is there to lick up his tears with glee. Banter & Whatsapp/YouTube Banter & Whatsapp/YouTube Banter & Whatsapp/YouTube The video shows a British man standing next to a crashed Ferrari F12 on the side of the road. From what we can tell, the guy standing next to the car is the driver, as he raises his arms in disbelief and mutters a few expletives while taking in his own handiwork. The car lost control and veered off the road, hitting a hedge with its rear-end. A small balustrade has also fallen victim to the out-of-control Italian supercar. The best part comes when the person videotaping the accident chirps "you can't park there mate" to which the Ferrari owner politely responds. Ferrari Ferrari Ferrari Ferrari The car in question is quite the beauty: the Ferrari F12berlinetta is an elegant GT supercar, powered by one of the most powerful naturally-aspirated production engines ever made. Its 6.3-liter V12 churns out a massive 730 horsepower that's sent to the rear wheels via a seven-speed automatic transmission. These cars cost over $300,000 when new, but this one will be worth a bit less we think. There's something so enticing about seeing a supercar crash, and we've covered countless Ferrari disasters, including a one-day-old Ferrari 488 Pista losing its life in a very embarrassing manner. As long as there are rich people crashing Ferrari's we'll be waiting with the popcorn at hand. The Chevrolet Blazer has proven to be quite the success, with the bowtie brand struggling to keep up with demand. And despite supply issues, the brand is still promising big things for 2022. While the US patiently waits in line for a taste, the Blazer is enjoying the limelight in other parts of the world, and we're starting to see some pretty awesome modified versions pop up. This Chevy Blazer "Mobile Command Center" was recently unveiled at the 2021 Guangzhou Motor Show. We know that the Chevy Tahoe looks great as a police interceptor, but the Blazer looks even better. weibo weibo weibo weibo The Blazer Mobile Command Center is based on the popular RS trim, and has been fully kitted from the outside in to serve, protect, and kick some serious ass. The exterior of this crime-fighting machine is painted in a menacing black, and covered in official-looking police insignia. Exterior modifications include a pedestrian-destroying bull bar, an aggressive hood complete with additional intake, a roof-mounted LED light bar, flared wheel arches, aggressive off-road tires with beadlocks, and yellow spotlights. Because we basically live in the future these days, the Mobile Command Center even comes with a drone landing pad on its roof. The drone can be commanded from inside the cabin via live video feed. weibo weibo weibo weibo Inside, the Mobile Command Center looks exactly like you think it would: covered in screens and buttons. The driver gets a laptop mounted where the front passenger would sit. This isn't usual police protocol, and looks more like something you'd see in a Blade Runner movie than on the streets of New York or California. Chevrolet clearly built the Mobile Command Center to draw crowds and peak interest at this year's Guangzhou Auto Show, and we think they accomplished that mission with flying colors. Chevrolet also revealed a Malibu with a Camaro ZL1 face swap at the show. weibo weibo weibo weibo weibo
Join The Discussion
Show Comments (2)
Gallery
14 Photos Tags: #Chevrolet News #Design #Off-Road #Technology
Related Cars
Chevrolet Blazer Michael Butler Associate Editor After four blurry years in advertising school, and a harrowing career in the advertising industry, by the will of the car gods, and his passion for anything with more than four cylinders, he landed at CarBuzz where he covers breaking automotive news, writes the occasional review, and plays a very average game of Counter-Strike.
